Covitz:Alex Smith will play entire first half of Sunday’s preseason game

Alex Smith will play entire first half of Sunday’s preseason game

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said starter Alex Smith would likely play the entire first half on Sunday night at Carolina, but the rest of the quarterback rotation has not been determined.

The starting offense struggled in the preseason opener against Cincinnati, going three-and-out, settling for a short field goal and Smith lost a fumble when sacked. Smith said he had a simple goal for Sunday night: Hold onto the football.

“That was the biggest play for me in my (time on the field),” Smith said. “You look at two third-and-shorts that we didn’t convert, one on the run play and the last on the pass play ... miscommunication there with the receivers. You just can’t have it.

“To me, two plays jumped out — one, the fumble, you just can’t have turnovers. The second one, that third-and-2 down there, in the red zone, if you convert, you have a good chance of walking away with a touchdown. Those are big downs, we know that. You have to execute those and it’s all kind of in the details.”

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

I'm not a big fan but you can't give a man less and then expect him to do more...
Like I said, the line is going to be a work in progress no doubt and I pilloried Andy Heck last year... but he eventually found a mix that worked well enough and I do think there are enough decent pieces in house to replicate that.

Its all on Fisher.

With the receivers, I wanted something, someone brought in and remain disappointed.

But if even 2 of these holdovers (Jenkins, Hemingway, Wilson?) can take a decent step forward with a healthy Kelce and MAYBE an emerging Harris, then things dont look quite so bad when you consider that everyone has been on the same page for 2 years now.

With more familiarity its natural to expect more consistency.

So if 3 or 4 longshots actually become productive players we'll be ok?

Think about what you're saying. Hell, if 4 scrubs came out of nowhere to be productive players for any offense they'd be good...

I'll either be proven right or wrong, I'm comfortable with the coaching ability and culture that seems to be taking hold here and, well... lets play some games and find out.

The one positive I see here is Phat Andy's coaching.

I'm am so glad Clark has the HC and GM independently reporting to him. I was completely wrong about both of them.

I now love Reid and want Dorsey to GTFO...

This just dawned on me.

I was completely against the Smith trade. Two 2nds being too much. Hated it.

I think even the biggest Smith bashers would agree he's a top 15 QB. Mostly because there are some really bad starting QB's in this league but it is what it is.

With two offseason FA periods and a complete draft at his disposal Dorsey hasn't added ONE player AT ANY POSITION who is top 20 in the league. Anyone. At any position. And this includes him having the no 1 pick in the draft.

Dorsey's best draft decision was not to use the picks and instead trade for Smith.

So, in summary: In two offseasons Dorsey has not added any quality starters while losing quality starters and his best draft decision was to not draft anyone. His drafting is such a pile of $3it it has made me a fan of the Smith trade...

I have to say I absolutely agree, and if this season is a losing season, I think it will be time to grab the pitchforks, pluck the chickens and warm up the tar

I think there's still plenty of hope for Dorsey's drafts. Not adding free agents I have zero problems with. Hopefully a solid year of development with those young players and a slew of draft picks next year can really solidify this team and set them up for sustainable success.

There is really not sufficient data to judge Dorsey either way.
