"Official" 2011 St. Louis Cardinals Thread

This is so unreal. We were dead. No hope. A season over. Somehow, someway we find some team chemistry and squeak into the playoffs on the last day of the season.

Only to find us facing one of the best pitching staffs assembled in years with home field advantage. We somehow, someway find a way to beat the best pitcher in baseball on the road in an elimination game.

We have to go on the road and beat the team with the best home record in baseball. A team who mortgaged their future to make this run .We somehow, someway find a way to beat them on the road and make our 18th World series trip.

We take game 1, we give away game 2 and home field advantage. Albert goes off for probably the best performance in World Series history and we take game 3 easily. Games 4 & 5 our bats fall asleep, Phone gate happens and its not looking too good.

Game 6, one of the best baseball games of all time and it takes place in a season ending go home game. Cardinals are down 2 runs in their final chance on the season, twice. They are down to their final strike of the season, twice. They give up a 2 run homer in extra innings. In the bottom of the inning their final 3 batters are a combined 3-26 in the Playoffs and a pitcher because the bench is empty. Somehow, someway they get some runners on and the comeback player of the year drives in the tying run. Mr. Freese hits the walk off home run. We will see you tommorrow night.

Game 7, With our bulldog on the mound pitching on 3 days rest he is able to give us 6 good innings and get us to within 9 outs of our 11 World series title. Texas meltsdown, probably left over from last nights game and its over.

The underdog, come back team who had no business even being in the playoffs wins a World championship. They make movies about events like this in life. Events that you remember even if your not a fan of the sport or team for the rest of your life.

When it is your team.......Priceless

Our starting pitcher (who can hit 100 mph), the best Dominican pitcher ever, even better than Pedro accoring to his manager......He will pitch on Thrusday at Bush stadium

DAVENPORT, IowaJohnny Rodriguez, the manager for the Cardinals' Low-A affiliate in the Quad Cities, saw something in Carlos Martinez's five shutout innings Friday night beyond the righthander's first win in the United States and his two pitches that hit 100 mph on several radar guns.
"What you saw was a 19-year-old come back from failing for the first time ever," Rodriguez said.

Martinez, the Cardinals' flame-throwing teen who they signed for $1.5 million last year, struck out nine of 18 batters faced, walked none and scattered three base hits as he worked for his first win in a domestic pro league. The Quad River Bandits backed him with a three-run homer from Nick Longmire and a 7-4 win against Cedar Rapids, the LA Angels' Midwest League affiliate.

A righthander with a lithe frame and what coaches called "easy heat" delivery, Martinez touched 100 mph twice in the first inning, according to several scouts in attendance. He sat around 97 mph with his fastball, and he stayed there as his pitch count climbed toward 80 pitches.

"I threw ... like I was throwing back home," Martinez said, through third baseman John Rodriguez, who acted as translator after the game.
The start was Martinez's first for the home crowd at Modern Woodmen Park, where he figures to call most of this season home. It was comes six days after a difficult outing in unpleasant weather -- what could be considered Martinez's first rocky outing as a pro and perhaps ever. The righty allowed six runs (all earned) on five hits and three walks through 2 2/3 innings. He struggled with his second stuff and wasn't enough in command of his fastball to put away hitters.

How Martinez would rebound from his setback was a question even a few hours before first pitch Friday.
He struck out the side to open the start.
Question answered.
"I saw his eyes during the game," his manager said. "They weren't here (drooping). They were here (straight ahead). Always here. Great bounce back."

Martinez got more use from his secondary stuff during Friday's start because he had to. The second batter of the game worked him for a nine-pitch at-bat. Martinez started off with fastballs, and he was helped by the hitters willingness to foul off fastballs outside of the zone. But to finish off the at-bat, which Martinez controlled at 0-2, the righty had to go to his off-speed stuff. Martinez froze one hitter with his curveball, and later in the start he became more deft with his changeup. That is a developing pitch that he doesn't quite have the feel for yet.

The fourth inning was his best inning as he struck out two batters and needed only 11 pitches to retire three batters. His last six pitches of the innings were all strikes, and his fastball remained in th 95- to 98-mph range.
All three of the hits he allowed in the start were singles.

"I just tried to do my job," Martinez said through his translator. "the job I used to do back in the Dominican."

Martinez is scheduled to be Quad Cities' starting pitcher Thursday when the River Bandits host a regular-season game at Busch Stadium. Much more on the righty coming next week in The Post-Dispatch and online here at StlToday.com.

Schumaker up - Boggs down.

Tell me you guys didn't see that one coming.

You knew LaRussa wasn't going to get rid of his shitty old relievers when he had a young guy with options he could **** with.

I hate Tony LaRussa so much. Our team is not only worse with the return of Schumaker to the lineup, it's doubly so with the demotion of a solid reliever in Mitchell Boggs.

Is Tony back yet? Obiously the GM had to sign off on it too. Who says baseball isn't a business? Only way to get Franklin out of the lineup like this would have been to waive him or put him on the DL. The league frowns highly upon the latter. The Cardinals didn't want to take the chance that what's wrong with Franklin is fixable. They're going to have to find something medically wrong with him and put him on the back burner for awhile.

Yes, Tony is back. No, Moe doesn't 'sign off' on anything; he dances to LaRussa's tune.

And you act as though waiving Franklin or Batista would've been some catastrophic event - waive 'em. Outright their asses to Memphis and let them request FA, as is their right as vested veterans.

What's wrong with Franklin is that he's 80 yrs old and operated without much margin for error to begin with. It has nothing to do with his problem being 'fixable', it's that LaRussa is a jackass that cares more about 'paying dues' than he does about talent.

This is a guy that is absolutely going to shoehorn Skip Schumaker back into the lineup despite the fact that both Descalso and Craig have proven to be far superior options than him to this point in the season. Afterall, skip's a 'core' player. This is a guy that once said that Molina was his catcher "even if he bats .200" because of his defense, then jettisoned Brendan Ryan in favor of Ryan Theriot because Theriot is a 'dependable veteran'...that can't actually play shortstop. This is a guy that would've absolutely watched Jason Isringhausen destroy the 2006 season had his arm finally not given out - paving the way for Adam Wainwright to save the day.

There's no legitimate baseball reason to this. It's just Tony being Tony.

welllll I agrees about the old azz relievers needing to go boggs for whatever reason wasn't getting work. Who knows why? Maybe they want him to do something and he doesn't want to coorperate? Who the **** knows. He obviously hasn't been given a fair shot at closing.

I hate it when you make me stick up for Tony. But just look at your own Izzy example. Tony pulled the trigger very fast on Franklin. Way faster than anyone ever dreamed he would pull the trigger. He didn't allow Franklin to destroy the season.

Delcaso is batting .200 and still starting because Tony thinks he may have soemthing in the kid.

He is going out of his way to get Craig in the lineup.

He is batting Rasmus against leftys.

Yesterdays line up was an example of his change, no matter how small that change.... 8 players out of 10 products of the farm system. Not all grizzled washed up veterans.

No one gives a shit if Boggs is closing or not.

It's the fact that Batista and Franklin are on the roster still. Hell, it would make more sense if Eduardo was sent down. Greene should be nowhere near this team, time to DFA his ass.
