"Official" 2011 St. Louis Cardinals Thread

This is so unreal. We were dead. No hope. A season over. Somehow, someway we find some team chemistry and squeak into the playoffs on the last day of the season.

Only to find us facing one of the best pitching staffs assembled in years with home field advantage. We somehow, someway find a way to beat the best pitcher in baseball on the road in an elimination game.

We have to go on the road and beat the team with the best home record in baseball. A team who mortgaged their future to make this run .We somehow, someway find a way to beat them on the road and make our 18th World series trip.

We take game 1, we give away game 2 and home field advantage. Albert goes off for probably the best performance in World Series history and we take game 3 easily. Games 4 & 5 our bats fall asleep, Phone gate happens and its not looking too good.

Game 6, one of the best baseball games of all time and it takes place in a season ending go home game. Cardinals are down 2 runs in their final chance on the season, twice. They are down to their final strike of the season, twice. They give up a 2 run homer in extra innings. In the bottom of the inning their final 3 batters are a combined 3-26 in the Playoffs and a pitcher because the bench is empty. Somehow, someway they get some runners on and the comeback player of the year drives in the tying run. Mr. Freese hits the walk off home run. We will see you tommorrow night.

Game 7, With our bulldog on the mound pitching on 3 days rest he is able to give us 6 good innings and get us to within 9 outs of our 11 World series title. Texas meltsdown, probably left over from last nights game and its over.

The underdog, come back team who had no business even being in the playoffs wins a World championship. They make movies about events like this in life. Events that you remember even if your not a fan of the sport or team for the rest of your life.

When it is your team.......Priceless

Tuesday was busy on the Cardinals' player development front. The machinery ground smoothly and more progress occurred.
  • Rookie catcher Tony Cruz got three hits in his major league debut at San Diego. He hardly looked out of place while giving Yadier Molina day off.
  • Memphis starting pitcher Lance Lynn struck out seven batters and allowed one run in 6 1/3 innings. His 8-2 victory kept him in contention for promotion should the Cards lose a starting pitcher.
  • Hot-hitting third baseman Zack Cox graduated from “high A” ball to Double-A Springfield. The Cards first pick in 2010 is on the 40-man roster, as per his bargaining demands last summer. He is rising fast, as per the organization’s expectations.
  • Palm Beach starting pitcher Joe Kelly worked into the eighth inning of his 3-1 victory, allowing one hit. He is 2-2 with a 2.91 ERA, living up to the high expectations he generated during spring training.
  • Acrobatic Dominican shortstop Ronny Gil went 1 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs for Quad Cities. In four games since graduating from extended spring training, he is 7 for 14 with two stolen bases. Cards fans will get to see him play in person Thursday at Busch Stadium.

...
What is it that James says about prospects? "Everybody's got 'em"

Literally every organization in MLB can write an article almost exactly like this one.

"Hey, a SP prospect that projects as a #4 starter at the big league level is having a nice season....huzzah! A no-hit catcher that got promoted due to injury had a nice first start...THAT NEVER HAPPENS!!!! The organizations first round pick and bonus baby got promoted to AA - he's sure to be a star!"

And on and on and on....

Every organization has prospects and every organization has a few of them showing well. The Cardinals organization is no different. I like Joe Kelly, but wake me when he's in AA. I have no idea what to think about Cox, but neither does the guy that wrote this article (he's a very strange prospect). And if he honestly believes Cruz is a 'heavy hitter', then I'm really not inclined to care what he thinks about the organization; Cruz is a catch and throw guy that got moved off the corners because he couldn't hit past high A. But leave it to that article to get all breathless about him. I'd say the writers own words damn him more than I could.

As for the success at the ML level - LaRussa's squads generally start out hot and they generally play far better as underdogs. His managerial style of intense focus often wears guys down around September and his intensity will manifest itself at pressing among his players if they're expected to excel. So a team that sees itself as an underdog is often less prone to faltering under the weight of LaRussa.

So the short answer to your question is: Yes, that's pretty much just more PD propaganda.

As I continue to point out - the perceived weakness of this team is still a weakness: bad defense just cost us another ballgame. And while the bullpen is coming together; we'll see if it stays that way in July when LaRussa decides 'Franky' is ready for another shot at prime time.

This team has holes that are very difficult to out-hit. We'll see if they're able to continue doing so.

I really dread every time Franklin pitches a clean inning because it puts him that much closer to getting another shot closing.

9-2 since the debacle against the Reds. 3.5 up. Anybody see the Diamondbacks are hot now. If the Giants drop from the loss of Posey, they could maybe take that division. I expected the Rockies to be better.

you wanting on my Cardinals 2011 bandwagon?

90 losses? A team with Holiday/Pujols/Berkman/Carpenter/Garcia/Molina? There would have to be some serious shit go wrong, more than losing Waino for the year and Freese for months again.

They've exceeded expectations that's for sure. I figured the offense would be potent, but the starting pitching has been a pleasant surprise. That bullpen is still ass though, so we'll see how much that holds them back.

I'm not saying they will defintely make the playoffs. The bullpen and a drop off in our starting pitching is a real possibility.

But if we do make the playoffs, we got a chance if we are hot just like every team does that time of the year. Baseball's WS winners are turning into College BB tourney type of predictability. The hottest team usually wins.

After 2004 and 2006 that should be clear to Cardinal fans. We were a way better team than the Red Sox that year. But, after that series with the Yankees forget it, no one was beating them. In 2006 we thought they would get swept in the first round of the playoffs because they looked some horrible heading into the playoffs.

Last year the Philly pitching was suppose to be so overpowering that no team stood a chance. and it goes on and on. Thats why they play the games /Yogi

The day after whatever date that service time won't start the FA clock ticking in 2012.........Miller makes the squad.

He finishes the year in AA. Goes to spring training, starts in AAA and gets called up.
