"Official" 2011 St. Louis Cardinals Thread

This is so unreal. We were dead. No hope. A season over. Somehow, someway we find some team chemistry and squeak into the playoffs on the last day of the season.

Only to find us facing one of the best pitching staffs assembled in years with home field advantage. We somehow, someway find a way to beat the best pitcher in baseball on the road in an elimination game.

We have to go on the road and beat the team with the best home record in baseball. A team who mortgaged their future to make this run .We somehow, someway find a way to beat them on the road and make our 18th World series trip.

We take game 1, we give away game 2 and home field advantage. Albert goes off for probably the best performance in World Series history and we take game 3 easily. Games 4 & 5 our bats fall asleep, Phone gate happens and its not looking too good.

Game 6, one of the best baseball games of all time and it takes place in a season ending go home game. Cardinals are down 2 runs in their final chance on the season, twice. They are down to their final strike of the season, twice. They give up a 2 run homer in extra innings. In the bottom of the inning their final 3 batters are a combined 3-26 in the Playoffs and a pitcher because the bench is empty. Somehow, someway they get some runners on and the comeback player of the year drives in the tying run. Mr. Freese hits the walk off home run. We will see you tommorrow night.

Game 7, With our bulldog on the mound pitching on 3 days rest he is able to give us 6 good innings and get us to within 9 outs of our 11 World series title. Texas meltsdown, probably left over from last nights game and its over.

The underdog, come back team who had no business even being in the playoffs wins a World championship. They make movies about events like this in life. Events that you remember even if your not a fan of the sport or team for the rest of your life.

When it is your team.......Priceless

So you think a 91 mph fastball is the solution in the the 9th inning? He misses location by just a foot and the most players will end the game right there on the one pitch.

Until Salas and Sanchez prove they suck worse than Franklin...keep him in mop up duty.

Franklin has been at his best in his career as a setup man.

Meanwhile Salas has the mental makeup and the stuff to get 3 outs in the 9th. He's young, he's cheap and he could solve our closer situation for the next 3-5 years. Franklin could pitch the role he's best suited for.

Or you could move Franklin back to the 9th exclusively because he's 'paid his dues'. You'd put us in a position where we're once again trying to figure out what to do at closer in 2012 (probably looking for an expensive FA). And you'd once again put guys in roles they weren't in the week before.

It's just stupid. Salas is getting the job done and there's nothing in his demeanor or arsenal to suggest he can't continue to do so. He throws harder than Franklin with better command and more movement - so in what world should Franklin be closing games?

Oh, that's right - Tony's world. And the world of the parade of bootlickers that are lined up to defend everything that mulleted nutsack does.

Oh, and for the record, Brendan Ryan is playing the best SS of anyone in baseball right now. And in so doing, he's also putting up a better OBP and a better OPS than the no-range, no-hands, no anything ex-Cub/Dodger 2b that we're putting at SS.

Still the single dumbest thing I've seen a Cardinal team do since the end of the brewery era. Dumping Ryan to make room for Ryan ****ing Theriot is the worst kind of LaRussa nonsense.

Against Lincecum?

Have fun with that. I think Westbrook is a !@#$ing dog myself; he's easily my least favorite SP.

Westbrook doesn't appear to trust his defense so he walks guys. If he's sharp and can hit the black, the nibbling might work out alright. But when he's not sharp, he just walks everyone because he doesn't have the faith in his stuff to believe he can get it past guys or in his defense to believe they'll field it.

You're flipping a coin everytime Westbrook takes the mound. You can ride that snake if you want, but I damn sure wouldn't.

I was watching him plat the other day, he was in the midst of a 9 game hit streak where he was hitting over .400 with a .561 OBP, man I'm glad we dumped that guy.

If Franklin pitched like he did in 2007 as Izzy's setup man, I'd be okay with that.

huh? Letting Ryan go was the single dumbest thing?

There are way too many options for that honor.

tell you what brc...dude could play ss. the way i look at it, if you're ****ing nails on defense, then you can add a little something on the side in the way of batting average. ryan holds his own.
wrong place, wrong time.

There were serious locker room issues last season. Some are blaming Ryan. He wasn't focused. Too weird and or different from the rest of the club etc...The only people who really know are the ones that we in the locker room. It's obviously a more happy locker room this year. We will see if it translates to us getting back to the playoffs again. Overcoming Waino, freese etc will have to be done by the youngsters and a us against the world mentality.

Delcaso comes through again in the clutch and Craig hits the first ever pinch hit home run off of Lincecum. Sanchez comes in and pitches great. Salas fails to nail it down again, 11 for 13. I guess that means Franklin is our new closer again

Franklin in during tie game in the 10th. Would be nice to see something from him in this situation but can't say I am at all comfortable with him here.

I believe that was Salas' first blown save of the year. 10 for 11.

Laugh all you want, but if the Cardinals put a run on the board in the 10th to get Franklin the W, I'll bet you even money that Franklin gets the 9th for the next save opp.

It's LaRussa - it's what he does.

It was gallows humor. Thats Franklins 4th scoreless apperance. It's just a matter of time.
