Are you saying there was a phantom DPI?

Because this narrative of "yeah, so there was a hold on the kickoff return, bUt YoU cAn CaLl A hOlD oN eVeRy PlAy!" is reeruned.... and then later when receiver's helmet gets turned 90 degrees, but the fix is in!

Cicny/KC-we are killing them. Game gets turned to another game in many markets. Then with a few carefully make calls, Cincy makes a comeback. Makes the game more interesting so the people watching continue to watch.

What the-carefully made calls-do is puts the game in jeopardy for both teams. Changes the momentum.
Again, the NFL's revenue is not dependent on the ratings of individual games. That's not how it works. The NFL does not make more money showing a game if the ratings happen to be higher. TV contracts are all contracted out well in advance.

I was curious about that the other day and asked that question in terms of what it means to the NFL, since TV contracts are for like 10 years or whatever... the whole Vegas betting lines and making money for rich people at least makes more sense if they were to steer games.

Anyone have any access to data about teams that play a high % of press coverage having more penalties called on the DBs? It would make sense that if your DBs are more aggressive/bump and run that you are likely to be called for contact after 5 yards, hands to the face, etc.

In 2019 the Bucs were number one. Did they change coaches? Nope. They added Brady and his fake greatness knocked them clear off the list. Makes you say mmmmmmmmmmm.

In terms of yardage, your top 3 in order are Raiders, Cowboys, 49ers.

So if the Raiders are favored by the NFL for the multitude of reasons already stated, why are they so heavily penalized?

What is the NFL up to here? Why are they working so diligently against them?

Clearly, we're not seeing the bigger picture here.

No one else finds this odd?

That the LV, SF and Dallas market teams are so heavily penalized?

Let me take a stab at this...

"You see, these penalties typically happen in low leverage spots. It allows NFL officials to then make calls in favor for these teams when it swings the win probability highest in their direction. When average joes then look at the stat sheet at the end, things appear equitable, heck, things appear like they were tilted against the big market teams, but when you look at which calls were most important to the win probability of the game, the big market teams benefit most when the fix is in. Watching games like this requires an enlightened, deeper understanding that the distorted reality presented to us on the gridiron is a tightly controlled kayfabe meant for the viewer's entertainment. Notice at the end of the games it says "entertainment broadcast" and not a sporting event. That slight, subtle, nuanced white noise that the viewer misses after the catharsis of the game, really shows itself for what it is in plain sight."

I liked the statement about biases from the refs. Maybe subconsciously, they are not showing equality.

I will end that there

The NFL just agreed to a deal to host Thursday Night Football exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. The deal will run for 11 seasons and is worth $1 billion - with a "B"

Ratings matter a whole hell of a lot when it's time to negotiate those billion-dollar deals.

The NFL's revenue is directly correlated to ratings. Just because deals are negotiated far in advance doesn't make them less meaningful. It just means they matter more when it's time to negotiate new deals.

You make an excellent point about ratings and money. Since Roger took over I don't feel like playoff teams are just left up to chance. Every game is not some snow job but teams with star players don't get bounced from the playoffs anymore. Prime example is NE vs. Jax a few years ago. Jax is kicking their ass then in the second half flags start flying in favor of NE and a clear fumble recovery for a td is taken away from Jax. Jax didn't have star players outside of Ramsey so they lost.
