X and O Guys - How Did Denver Just Shut down the Chiefs Blitz?

All with football acumen please help me understand. Why didn't the Chiefs Defense touch 5 head, neck bone at least once or twice?

Yeah, they showed it from behind the line of scrimmage and Demps was barely off. Had he been there a split second sooner he would have taken that one to the house.

I liked the risk, just wish he would have executed.

Great read that in addition to showing that Manning pretty much eliminated any possibility of taking hits or sacks, demonstrates that sacks are just as much the QB's responsibility as the OL. Granted WR's need to get clean releases, but Alex Smith just doesn't make quick reads, quick decisions, nor does he have an especially quick release. If he's holding the ball that long, he should be going down field. For a short pass west-coast style offense if he is holding the ball that long, he isn't doing his job.

Really, it was just a stupid defensive play.
Don't worry - embrace letdown in less than two weeks. We'll split this season. Just be sure you show up then, babe.

Other teams will successfully hit Manning... Win or Lose they will go down swinging hitting Manning..

Chiefs on the other hand? not a chance they touch Manning in round two unless Bob Sutton takes his balls out of his wifes purse...

Just seemed the whole night that they were scared shitless... I watched the game with some Donkey friends in Norman. They called our boys cowards for at least not trying to take a shot at hitting him...

all I could do is facepalm in embarrassment and shame.

take a closer look at this play -- Sutton blitzed DJ up the middle. I don't think Sutton did the "same thing" all night. I'm reviewing the game and I see a lot of different wrinkles in the fronts plus blitzes from several different positions. the most effective play that night was when Devito put his hands up and blocked a pass. I expected the DL to do a lot of that, but I only saw Devito bat one down that night.

It's really simple. Peyton just gets the ball out quick. He always has an outlet with this offense. That's why you get burned if you blitz a lot of players at Manning.

Watch the games.
Sutton isn't doing a lot of blitzing throughout the season.
He has bee creative with the basic 4 man rush, with timely blitzes mixed in.

Blitzing Manning, who was consistently getting the ball out in 2 seconds or less, would have served no purpose.

That middle blitz from DJ that Ace alludes to, DJ comes up the middle untouched, but doesn't get past the LOS because Manning already has the ball out.

The defense actually did a remarkable job of containing that potent offense.

Our inept offense gave them opportunity after opportunity, and the defense made them work for every yard and every point.

Reerun post is reerun post. Read the article posted earlier in the goddamned thread. It confirms what the rest of us, (you know, those of us who apparently actually watched the game) have been saying. The plan to counter the pass rush was to have quickly developing pick plays with rapid progressions to get the ball out off Manning's hand in under three seconds. So quit crying about the Chiefs pass-rush like it was remotely the problem. It wasn't. Nor was Sutton's gameplan. Against Manning with that plan, you have to man up and beat the receivers. Problem is, there are five matchups on any given play and the receivers get paid, too. If everyone on the defense succeeds 80% of the time, one guy will get open every play on average.

The bottom-line is that the defense forced three-and-outs and stifled the offense for a good portion of the game. But the offense couldn't keep them off the field or capitalize on critical opportunities against a weak-ass defense.

I spent five minutes typing a post when I should have just waited thirty seconds for this post to appear and typed, "this."
