Bills fans acknowledge hopelessness after watching SB

Porn posted in the predawn hours after the Chiefs victory in SBLVII. They also have a 100 post Zayne Anderson thread and dreams of poaching Wylie and Neon Deon Bush

The Bills are talking about Allen needing a lot of help to win a SB on One Bills Drive, if he needs a lot of help then he’s not a half step behind Mahomes.

Regardless though, they have some serious issues with the cap and their starting defense. Plus, they don't have much depth on that side of the ball either, it sounds like.

I think they probably still win their division next season, but they won't be good enough to beat either CIN or KC. Might not be able to beat JAX in 2023 either.
The Buffalo defense has looked like a pretty big fraud in the playoffs for 3 straight years. Average of 35.6 points per game in 3 losses to Chiefs & Bengals. This is after the Buffalo defense had strong results in the regular season every year.

If I was the Buffalo GM, I would get rid of some of the expensive veterans on defense and go all in on the offensive side of the ball. Make the OL stronger to help Josh. Give him better weapons. See if you can put together an offense that can drop 40+ at will in the Playoffs, which is what you'll need if the Buffalo defense continues allowing so many points in these big games.

Agree. Unfortunately for BUF fans, it sounds like their GM is also part of the problem. Specifically, he doesn't draft well. I mean, it's like on page 2 of that thread that one of them asks for our 2023 draft picks (presumably after Veach drafts them).

But yeah, I agree in that they should be drafting/acquiring more offensive talent. Upgrade the OL. Trade or cut some of the fat on that defense.

Sidenote: BUF has had a top-5 defense two years in a row now, that shit the bed in the postseason. Which tells you everything you need to know about the difference between a regular season defense and a playoff defense. The BUF defense is good to great against 70% of the teams they face weeks 1-17, because 70% of those teams aren't very good offensively anyway. But every team in the playoffs can score (exception being NYG this season, but everyone knew they were frauds, or should have).

Frazier's defense can't stop or even blunt a top tier offense, without an elite pass-rusher.

So, if they're going to keep Frazier, then as you say, better plan on scoring a lot more points.

Not going to work with Dorsey as the OC, but short of tearing it down and starting over, what else can they do?

The problem with the “Win now” philosophy is that when it fails it sets a team back quite a bit. One thing they have going for themselves is they have an elite franchise QB. As long as they have that they should always be competitive.

They put pretty much all of their excess eggs into the Von Miller basket to get their defense over the edge. Might have worked too if his ACL doesn't go. But now they're ****ed

Yeah, trying to go all in to win right now carries a lot of risk, and the potential for an epic faceplant if you don't win is pretty high.

Tbh, Allen is reminding more and more of Marino in terms of career trajectory. The Dolphins never put together the right team for Marino, but were always in the conversation because of Dan. But when your defense is consistently terrible, and/or you can't find a decent run game for half a decade or whatever, there's only so much Marino could do.

Allen looks like he's headed down the same path.

The best way to win in this league is to build an offense capable of scoring 40 while hoping to build a defense capable of giving up 39 or less. Defenses have been too neutered to be elite like some of the greatest defenses of yesteryear.

The Bengals have done the best job of striking the balance. Yes I know Burrow is on a rookie deal, but so was Mahomes at one point and the Chiefs defense struggled during his rookie contract. The Bengals have an explosive offense and they have a defense that has not allowed more than 23-24 points in 7 playoff games the last 2 seasons. This includes 4 games against very explosive offenses (Rams, Chiefs twice, Buffalo). It will be interesting to see if Cincy can maintain this level of defensive performance over time as they begin paying bigger money at QB & WR.

Finding a DE has actually been the waterloo for their GM. They have put three picks in 2020-2021 in the first two rounds on a DE (Epenesa, Rousseau, and Boogie Basham) and STILL needed to give Von a 130 million contract to shore up that position. And when Von went down, none of their draft picks could step up to even be a solid replacement.

It's a real reason as to why many of them worry about trading Diggs. For that to work, you need your draft picks to hit.

On another note, many Bills fans (it's all over their Arrowhead Pride equivalents) were hoping they'd draft Creed as a cheap replacement for Morse. They went with Boogie instead. That's been a serious amount of draft resources expended on a position with very little output.

That’s because Andy had us in the playoffs pretty much every year before Mahomes. Bridesmaids had LOTS of top 5-10 picks. Let’s see how they do organizationally now that that’s changed. And they have to start paying their elite talent.

Some of Cincy's best defensive players were acquired from other teams, like Hendrickson & Reader. We'll see what they do over time.

Cincy is fortunate to still have their DC after he had 2 rounds of interviews with Arizona. I think he was way more qualified than that Philly DC who got exposed in the Super Bowl. But the Cardinals are a shit show organization, so they snubbed the older Cincy DC and went with the fraudulent young guy from Philly.

Arizona hired the wrong guy because they are Arizona and that’s just what they do. Cincinnati has done well in FA which is good, but the key is sustaining that when the stars need to get paid.

They've done well in the Draft on defense as well. Looks like a lot of starters from the 3rd round, 4th round, etc. Big part of this is probably the DC, who seems to get those guys to tackle & cover very well. We'll see if they can keep it rolling as various players on both sides of the ball get more expensive.
