Because students can't be viewed the same as employees, even if you are paying some of them to be there.

That's the problem.

Many people don't seem to realize that Wolfe's role at the University - title be damned - is essentially Chief Administrator. People believe Wolfe is the face of the University and should act like it, but prior to this dustup I guarantee you that most people that are even pretty well attuned to the University couldn't tell you what Tim Wolfe looked like.

He's not a public presence and that's never really been his responsibility. Wofle trying to do this particular job like a CEO really isn't a bad thing at all. You need clinical, level-headed people like him in high positions of leadership that will take a purely detached look at things. You can't have them all be like that, but that's why Mizzou has Loftin around. Loftin is the glad-handed personable one that does his job the way that Busby evidently thinks all people in positions of leadership should do it.

I actually think the contrast in personalities at a high level like that is a very good approach.

Oh you mean the schools would organize and fund it. They'd need to form an organizing body and rules committee, have someone act as oversight on recruiting violations, plus a legal structure, a public relations arm...hmmmmmm

They aren't treated as employees. They are, however, treated as customers. And with any business, there's an understanding that sometimes you have customer complaints that you simply don't engage. Or you know that at a certain price point, addressing them becomes prohibitive. Or you simply take the approach that pleases the most customers despite the fact that it angers some.

You appear to want a pack of young adults to be handled as though they are schoolchildren. And frankly, that's kinda what Loftin does. But everyone can't do that - someone needs to be behind the scenes looking at them as just another line on a ledger because that's how large organizations work. That was Wolfe's job and he didn't do it nearly as poorly as people are saying.

What does this do for college athletes in general? I could see this being the first step in them starting a college athlete's player union. The university royally screwed up by letting it get to that level, because the precedence that has been set is frightening. Whether they were really the tipping point or not, the message that can be pulled from this incident is that, "We have the power and can start to make demands."
There current record in basketball and football aside, few of these children seemed destined for anything more than being shoe salesmen.

Seems like that $1B a year in revenues the NCAA generates would come in handy for such an exercise.

I think the axe isn't done swinging at MU. Looks like Lofton could very well be out soon too.

Yes. They could use it to create another ncaa. Hopefully a less bloated model.

And one where they actually get properly compensated for the revenues they generate.

There is certainly room for improvement there. The whole paying athletes thing though is tricky...

If the NCAA doesn't pay them something more eventually, there may not even be a NCAA down the road.

{sigh}

Never let a crisis go to waste, right guys?

Very few people had issues with Loftin until the Planned Parenthood thing. Suddenly a faculty that is 90% liberal can't stand the guy. Gee...I'm shocked.

Loftin's a good Chancellor; brooming him would be a mistake.
