Do we want DeHop?

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl...9536dcd3&ei=21

Story by Andrew Gould

The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl without a star wide receiver, but they could reportedly make an elite offense even scarier by acquiring DeAndre Hopkins.

NFL insider Benjamin Albright told PHNX Cardinals that Kansas City is the "primary suitor" for Hopkins. He doesn't know the draft compensation the Cardinals would receive, but he said it's more likely they get a second-round pick than a first.

After the 2022 season, theScore's Jordan Schultz reported that the Cardinals plan to trade Hopkins this offseason.

Arizona hired a new general manager and head coach after a disappointing four-win season, and Hopkins is set to make $19.45 million (with a $30.75 million cap hit) in 2023. The Cardinals could seek a clean slate by moving the three-time All-Pro wideout, who turns 31 in June.

Hopkins began his Cardinals career by tallying 1,407 yards and six touchdowns in 2020. However, multiple lower body injuries limited him to 10 games in 2021, and he served a six-game suspension to start the 2022 season for violating the NFL's PED policy.

Yet he remains an impact player when on the field. Hopkins totaled 474 receiving yards in six full games with quarterback Kyler Murray last season.

Now imagine what he can accomplish when catching passes from Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs flourished without a star replacement for Tyreek Hill, but they could still benefit by solidifying the position this offseason. JuJu Smith-Schuster is a free agent after garnering 78 catches for 933 yards on a one-year deal. The depth chart features several talented question marks in Mecole Hardman, Kadarius Toney, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Adding Hopkins could be great news for Kansas City, but terrible for all opposing defenses.

Do we want a high priced prima donna?

I just get so exhausted by these guys who want to re-do their contracts every season. It makes proper roster planning damn near impossible. Then to see folks like Mahomes and Kelce, or even Jones - who has played quietly on his deal from day 1 that it was signed, or guys like Fisher and Schwartz before this group...

We've been awfully fortunate to not have '**** you, pay me' on this roster really in Reid's entire tenure. Frankly the last guy I can think of who was often saber rattling about his deal was Tony Gonzalez.
The guy that deserves it the most and you never hear him say shit about it...is Kelce. Dude is criminally underpaid but never complains.

Trp. Especoslly when you consider he was on his way to having one this year before he got hurt.

Yup but he’s gonna step right into Hollywood after football IMO. Not many guys have that ability but I think he’s one of them.

Can Hardman even pass a physical right now? My guess is he won't sign anywhere until after the draft.

Right, I get that. I'm just saying that there's really no fire beneath the smoke when it comes to these rumors about him wanting $25M AAV. He never said that and if anything, his camp has suggested he DOESN'T want that.

That doesn't mean we'll be able to afford him in the end. We probably can't. And if he's just going to want a new contact, your right - we'd probably be better off without him.

Ever talked to him? Dude, Hardman IS a fool.

I’ve said all along I think he returns on a 1 year incentive based deal…but nobody is even going to give him that until he can show he still has elite speed.

Speed is his ONLY elite trait.

Mahomes is constantly frustrated with his inability to make the proper sight adjustments in his routes (because he didn’t start understanding coverages till last year)

His route tree is horrendous

He doesn’t fight for extra yards, chooses to go oob versus cutting up.

If the injury/reinjury stripped him of a step…what role does he have in the NFL?

Draft or trade for a guy and pay him. It is what it is.
That isn’t a bad thing.

I won’t get into whether a guy like waddle is worth the big contract. We’ve been down that road before. And we know we all feel about that.

So what’s the other option? Well, we could draft a WR1 but we’d also rather not pass on an OT or DE if they’re there. So these are good bandaids. Prove it contracts. Or 1-2 year deals which… it’s fine to overpay as long as you don’t commit long term. If you want to draft a guy, then bandaids are great to buy you time (which we know Reid prefers) but also to not put so much risk on asking a rookie WR to immediately step up and play at minimum on a juju level.

Also things like injury risk are less a big deal. If you feel confident we can win without a WR1 then you can be extra careful during the regular season to prep for the late run. If a bandaid is useful you don’t need perfection. You just need the guy to be immediately be good enough to play WR2… ideally WR1, even if at a lower tier.

We’ve now reached the “acceptance” stage in AZ. Don’t think this will take much longer.
