4. Mason 103.2

6. Vick 104.7
7. Svi 104.9

(Here are the ratings for the 2013 team that finished 3rd in def efficiency:

Ellis 89.1
McLemore 93.1
EJ 95.8
Releford 95.6
Jamari 86.6
Tharpe 97.0
Kevin Young 86.6)
You do realize that those numbers don't actually mean anything, right? That, when a guard can feed a driving opponent into the waiting arms of a 7'0, historically good shot blocker, that their arbitrary "defensive rating" goes up?

You do realize that these types of analytics are for fans who can't just watch basketball and tell who is playing well and who is not?

You don't?

Ok.

I think that metric is understating Mason's defense. He doesn't get a lot of steals, nor is he an absolute stopper. But he rarely gets beat to the point he puts helpside defense in a bad position and he is an excellent rebounder. He isn't Releford embarrassing fools, but he is above average IMO.
Mason isn't a bad defender, his issue is one that he cannot help. He has no length - so while he's relatively good at positioning and on the ball, he does not have any length to restrict passing lanes, or be efficient in help defense. KU's style of Defense emphasizes collapsing on the ball to force a pass and then utilizing (because they're Kansas right?) superior athletes to contest shots with run-outs. Having guys like Ellis (undersized) and Lucas (non-athletic) coupled with smaller guards such as Mason hasn't helped. Add in players like Selden who was in lala land (Vick does the same thing), Svi who cannot guard his shadow, and the Brannen Greene's of the world (who the f*** knew what this guy was doing). Those are the length players Self looks for, but ended up having severe flawes defensively. Unfortunately, they all add up to a shitty defense compared to what Self teams are used to.

I'm not sure I can trust an analytic that says basically Releford was the worst defender on the team.

Do you ever post anything of value here?

So you don't like the def eff ratings. Offer up something in response, doosh. Or admit you have nothing.

You can go thru the last decade of KU player ratings and easily tie the data to what you see. Your argument, therefore, is as stupid as you are.

Agreed. But I watch the game and there is no way that Mason is the problem. Or even that he is below average across the entire NCAA. (I think I read PB's post properly)

Lecomte commits his 4th foul. Proceeds to mouth off. Gets a T to foul himself out of the game with 8:30 left.

Go tech (and refs)!

We will get to miss the first six minutes of our offense actually looking good. Maybe we will get a double overtime thriller with both teams under 70 points.
