What about sidestepping Title IX by saying compensation for athletes comes only from likeness licensing (NCAA Football) and television coverage?

If they could get away with that, I would think they would have already done it instead of giving out scholarships.

Lebron, Kobe, and Garnett are really pissed off at themselves for missing out on that college training. The minor leagues in baseball and hockey do the same exact thing but at least these players get paid. In soccer, tennis, and golf, you can become pro even without ever attending college.

You can become pro in football whenever you want. There aren't any laws preventing it. The NFL has rules against it, but take that up with them, not the NCAA. Kids can still play in Canada or the arena league.

The NFL has an exemption from congress allowing them to exist the way they do. Why should as association of amateur athletics be forced to pay college kids because a professional organization won't?

You're barking up the wrong tree here. If anything, you should be calling on the NFL to be forced to create a minor league system on their own dime...not make universities do it for them.

Most of these players don't even want to go to school or get an education. Why should they have to pay tuition if the only reason they're getting an education is because it's a pre-req to playing football? If this were baseball, they'd have the option to opt out of that education, go to the minor leagues, and get paid for it. In basketball, you can declare eligibility after one year.

A lot of these are poor kids with no money. The "benefits" give them a place to stay, but it doesn't buy them food and basic living expenses. These kids can earn money on their own, but the NCAA regulates that too.

If the NCAA is powerless to stop MLB from drafting kids out of HS, why are they responsible for the NBA and NFL not allowing players to do the same?

Hell, let those leagues set aside $X millions a year to create a pool to pay college players if you want to go that route. You're basically asking colleges to do all of the training, coaching, player development, etc. for these professional leagues...at no cost to the NBA and NFL...and still have to pay the players on top of it.

Why does the NCAA catch all the heat when it's the professional leagues that want to eat their cake and have it too?

It's a fair point.

But putting the NFL piece aside, if that's the environment, then the ncaa has a responsibility to work fairly within that system too. Before there were child labor laws, sure businesses were operating within the system, but it didn't justify child exploitation.

Not to say this is anything close to the same. The ncaas mission is a good one, except that we all know there is an unbelievable amount of crookedness in how they operate. If we felt the money was being pumped back into education or the schools, that would be one thing. If we felt the rules were consistently enforced, that would be another. The current system as is encourages cheating, it fosters corruption, and leads to a bunch of people exploiting free use of someone's name to line their own pockets. I don't support schools paying players. I am just glad the ncaa is being called out for their ridiculously broken practices that are so heavily stacked against the athlete. Create a fairer system. That's all.

If MOST of these players have no interest in getting an education, then most of these players aren't looking at the big picture. A very small percentage of college football players will make it to the NFL. OF this small percentage, very few will make millions of dollars playing football.

I'm fine with that. My issue is that the NCAA has been pretty consistent for decades. The professional leagues are the ones that keep changing their eligibility rules in order to use college athletics as a free farm system, but the NCAA is catching hell for it when they have zero say over what the professional leagues allow or don't allow.

The NCAA can't make anybody stay. The extent to which players feel like they have no choice but to play college ball is 100% the result of rules set by professional sports leagues run by billionaires. These billionaires manipulate their rules in order to make college aged kids audition for years so that the leagues don't wind up paying millions of dollars to players who bust. They push that cost/risk onto universities, and instead of being mad at the billionaires receiving anti-trust exemptions, we shake our fists at the NCAA. It's ludicrous.

A lot of these kids are poor and are being asked to pay for food, basic living expenses while being denied any chance at an income. Free room and board is nice. Free education is nice but it means something totally different to a kid with a lousy high school education at a world class institution who probably doesn't even understand what's going on. And if education were truly the main objective, then we wouldn't have rigorous practice and travel schedules. We wouldn't force these kids to attend media days, charity events, etc... All for someone else to make money off of their name.

Again, I agree with the mission of the ncaa. I hate how off mission they've become and these silly rules about player benefits needs to change. If a kid can make some extra money not from the school, let them.

For long time I have supported paying college players because they are making the unveristy a ton of money. But I think there could be a middle ground here.

Just remove all work\sponsor restrictions for student athletes. They could get jobs like the rest of college students do and if they are good enough they could get shoe\jersey deals etc.

Does Bammy pay their coaches what they pay Saban?

"That comp comes from other sources"

Ok then, they'll figure out how to do the same for the athletes. Unless you believe women's tennis pays their coach $5m
