How about not seating them in the first place? They bump people at the gate all the time. I don't think it is common to let someone board then tell them to get off.

United is going to get the digital backlash they deserve from this clusterf$ck...not only did they remove a paying, boarded customer...but resorted to violence. Like a dude passing out pretzels in Louisville was so critical...they had to drag a doctor off with a bloody face.
That CEO is done...his damage control tactic just cost them millions in future revenue. I love it... Last edited by BlackOp; 04-11-2017 at 01:37 AM.. |

3 other people willingly got up and got off the plane. I heard a guy on the radio this morning make a great point, ironic the Dr wouldn't give up his seat, they are the kings of overbooking and you never get into your appointments on time. |

They got off to leave the plane because they agreed to the compensation. Notice his wife left the plane willingly. She knew she didn't have an obligation to see patients And the guy on the radio blasting a doctor for overbooking made a lousy comparison. Doctors provide services not yet paid for and they overbook because patients depend on the services. Airline services on the other hand had a good chunk of customers there purely because of the pricing. It's not like doctors are doing sliding scale pricing if their day isn't filled up. They do their damn best to see every patient as quickly as possible. This wasn't a flight delay or weather or mechanical damage. If you found out doctors were intentionally over booking and charging different prices based on the schedule for that day purely for profit, you'd understand. And no, bringing in law enforcement to bully customers into accepting this practice is not acceptable, nor is law enforcement using excessive force to remove a customer. The doctor booked an entire day of appointments on the reliance of that flight to get him home on time. Lots of people make arrangements with reliance on the plane to get them there on time. And it's sad to think of the millions upon millions the airlines have costed their customers with this shitty practice. If a doctor was found to have intentionally overbooked solely for profit reasons and denied a patient who needed urgent medical care, that doctor would be sued. Don't even compare a service industry of doctors trying to help people with airlines moving customers purely for the sake of profit. |

Prior to that, he is only being combative because he refused to get off the plane against his will. Again, we aren't talking about a guy getting booted for bad behavior. And it's hard to even call his verbal statements as "combative." . He was booted because of a random lottery. That's terrible on so many levels. I think you'd be a little pissed if you got booted in this way, let alone if you believed in your mind that you had an important obligation. In this case, he seems to have had a genuinely selfless reason to want to be home. |

When you are on an airplane/jet, the flight attendants and the pilots are the law. YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW THEIR INSTRUCTIONS. Now, when the police show up, that is the last resort for the airlines. You've been afforded every chance to leave peacefully. Leave and file your complaint later. The injury he suffered is his own fault. When the guys with the guns show up, you're way past negotiating. Once the airlines tells you that you need to deplane and don't, you are then trespassing and they have the right to remove you, forcefully if necessary. Thumbs up to United.
