He will be targeted because Alex is a master lof the short passing game, but the 49ers defensive game plan will be to limit the short passing game and make Alex beat them on deep and intermediate routes.

Even Willis would probably not be able to do this well enough. Brooks would have zero chance...

Ahmad Brooks is the pass rush LB. *and not well so far this year*

Willis and Willhote 6-1 6-0 on a 6-5 TE that is just as fast or faster.

Bowman was the best coverage LB on the team.

Kaepernick is cruisin for a bruisn facing a team with a real pass rush.

On Sunday, Kap’s time to throw was 3.71 seconds. That number was 0.60 seconds higher than any other quarterback.
One of the few times he read coverage and threw under 3 seconds it was a bad read and got picked.

Kaepernick has regressed as they have evolved the offense with multiple WR sets.
Bridgewater looked like a better passer. He saw the defense and got the pass out and accurate on time for the most part on Sunday.
He turns 22 in Nov. Kaep turns 27.

This.
Kelce is a mismatch for LBs due to speed and DBs due to size/strength. That dude is the real deal.

KC needs to run like a muh fuh, hit Kelce on crossing patterns and seam routes, and playaction deep to keep the niner's defense from stacking the box.

On D, spy CK. That guy could absolutely kill us with his scrambling. Luckily, we have a QB that's adept at the same, so we have practiced against it quite a bit.
We have to contain Gore; he is the key to their offense. When FG is rolling, the niners are a really tough team to beat.

Isn't this everyone's "defensive game plan" against Smith? I have seen this every single week from Smith-detractors... And his record is what since 2011... 31-12-1? Even though it is apparently so easy to beat Smith with his "obvious limitations", he seems to usually be able to score more points than his opponents in the last 3+ years.

If the niners are going to beat Smith and KC, they better come up with more than that. They are going to have to get to him quick, because even if you crowd the box - which his detractors like to think will just ruin Smith, he still finds someone open to throw to. You've got to get to him before he can get through his progression - crowded box or no.

Niners don't have a great pass rush right now, but KC's o line has no business being on the same field with Justin Smith. Will be very interesting to see how this goes down.

Pretty much. The plan to beat Alex is the same plan to beat any QB in the league.

Take away the easy stuff, force them to make difficult throws, stop the run, and pressure them.

People act like it's exclusive to Alex Smith, it's hilarious.

Actually it's not the same for every QB.

Other QBs get played differently because if you cheat up on the short stuff too much against a Peyton Manning or an Aaron Rodgers or even a Jay Cutler...they will roast your ass deep.

Yep. If there were such a simple and clear blueprint to stopping Alex, he wouldn't still be a starter after all of these years. He'd have been shut down for complete ineffectiveness.

As for Justin, they better keep him doubled up.. whether the LG and C double up focus on him, or a FB/HB help a single OL with him.

Go watch how the 49ers played against the Eagles.

They took away the easy stuff and forced Foles to make the difficult throw deep to the outside on post out routes. That's how they shut down that Eagles offense, an offense that is similar to ours.

Of course teams don't want to give up the deep pass, but the principle remains the same.

1. Take away the run game and make the team one dimensional. Why the run game? Higher chances for turn overs if the ball is constantly in the air.

2. Pressure the QB.

3. Force him to make the difficult throw with even more difficulty (due to pressure).

4. Take away his primary to help your pass rush out (which is why a shutdown corner is so valuable).

I am worried about Smith. He walked Jason Peters right into the backfield on a play like he was facing a rookie and not an All-Pro vet.

And yet he seems to still do pretty well, in most games. KC is one of the leading rushing teams right now which doesn't make alot of sense, given their green o line and the perception that everyone is crowding the box on them all the time.

I think this is one reason why Smith is successful. He really doesn't have a primary. He is very good about spreading the ball all over the field. But he does need time to get through his progression.
