Earlier Wednesday, Sony pulled the film, which depicts the assassination of North Korea's leader, following a threat that people should avoid going to theaters where "The Interview" is playing. The country's major theater companies had said they had decided to postpone or cancel next week's showing.
"In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film "The Interview," we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release," Sony said in its first statement on the matter.
"Sony Pictures has been the victim of an unprecedented criminal assault against our employees, our customers, and our business. ... We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie. ... We stand by our filmmakers and their right to free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome."

Is it impossible for the hackers to delete the movie altogether from Sony's database? If they had administrator access to its network and had already leaked many other movies I'd think that would be a possibility.

Despite Sony's overall lack of security, I find it hard to believe their IT department is SO incompetent they failed to back the data up. Granted backing up data is right up there with changing default passwords (or not using the file name as a password) in IT 101, but when the product is the data, I imagine they have some archive somewhere.

I can't verify that Sony has a "vault" containing original IP but there's a vault at Universal for certain.

With blockbusters like "The Hobbit" and others opening next week, losing any percentage points would hurt the cinema chains and of course, the movie studios.

Studios have been backing down more and more from any form of threat.

We're now at a point where North Korea determines what movies will be released. It would be comical if it wasn't so incredibly sad.
