Oh no the Chiefs may lose to Cincinnati or Buffalo! Half the NFC team will have to go down in plane crush for either to win a Superbowl

Neither Cincinnati nor Buffalo have done a single thing to jump in front of Kansas City. In fact, both look significantly worse than last season, with real losses.

Meanwhile, KC is exactly the same as the team that won the AFCCG and almost the same crew as the Super Bowl, minus a hobbled Juju and plus Omenihu.

Veach and Reid have said they're expecting Toney and Moore to play big roles. Everything they've done thus far says they're serious about that.

But you need an insurance policy, in case Toney gets hurt again, or Moore does, or one or the other struggles for whatever reason. And so you grab James, who's in a similar physical mold, has some experience in this offense under Kafka, and gives you a baseline of professional receiver.

He's WR4, and can function just fine as that, and you're not screwed if he has to play more than that.
I think this is probably right, but I wonder if it's something between this and Megatron's take. Maybe it's insurance but focusing on covering Moore and to a lesser extent Toney. Whereas Watson might have been able to cover a little more of MVS in a pinch. I'm probably way off basically I agree with you, I think he's a guy you ask to cover a few roles including PR

Exactly.

Here's the thing: I'm pretty sure we suit up 5 WRs per game. So, right now it looks like:

Toney
Skyy
MVS
Justyn Ross
John Ross
Richie James
???
???
???

But when you look up John Ross' injury history and chances of him getting injured in 2023, it comes up 93% chance of injury in 2023, 15% per game. Justyn doesn't have any % because he hasn't played in the NFL, but we can assume that he probably has similar percentages, maybe somewhat (10%?) less.

So Veach signs a guy like James partially because he doesn't have an injury history. He's literally insurance. Plus, he basically plays from the slot, and so does Skyy, so lots of overlap. Then if Toney goes down, either Skyy or James will slide into that role.

I'm assuming that James has a decently high football IQ so he picks up the playbook relatively quickly and will be able to do those things, but Veach and Andy don't pick up dumb WRs generally speaking, so i feel like that's a safe bet.

It's fine theoretically. It assumes either Justyn or Ross will play significant snaps and games, and that Toney will be healthy for most of the season.

It gets thin pretty quick, imo, if Toney is out for several weeks and/or one/both of the Ross brothers don't get any further than PS/ST. We're also assuming that Skyy will be a fully fleshed out WR, able to play every receiving spot and situation.

Considering the history of Andy's use of rooks, I'm just not going to hold my breath. But if a rook magically produces at a decently high level right off the bat, I'll be the first to jump on their wagon.

I find it hard to believe Andy doesn’t already have a couple play’s drawn up for the guy who ran the fastest official 40 ever at the combine.

Basically the same plays Hill ran when he was WR1.

Yeah I can’t see how they don’t keep that guy on the PS at worst. It’s no hard to replace Hardman’s role if you have special speed.

A cheap lottery ticket like this or a day 3 pick could do this day 1

Yeah probably pretty close but Andy is great at finding new ways to scheme guys open. He’s got a new Ferrari even though it’s not reliable nor does it fit many practical uses he’s going to want to drive it.

Yeah, Andy's the genius, so I can't say exactly how he'll scheme things up if John Ross plays significant snaps. But I wonder to myself if it makes sense to put both MVS and John on the same side and alternate trying to scheme one or the other open, or something like that. John is quicker than MVS and can run things like comebacks/buttons/whips etc. much more effectively than MVS, so a lot of those intermediate underneath routes should be available. Kind of similar route combos as what Andy ran when both Hill and Watkins were healthy.

I like the Richie James signing but he does have some warts.

He has not been injury free. He was on IR for the 2021 season with a knee injury. In June of 2020 James broke his wrist while working out. He also broke his collarbone at Middle Tennessee State and only played 5 games in 2017.

In four seasons he also has 8 fumbles. Two of them occurred last season (on returns) when the Giants played the Seahawks.
