Thoughts the day after

Went to bed embarrassed and mad. Woke up fine.

We've lost so infrequently over the past couple years that I think we've forgotten how to do it. And how to cope with it as fans.

That defensive performance was about as pathetic as I can ever remember. Literally no saving grace on that front. And that's concerning. But we can acknowledge that these two matchups were particularly bad for this team and we've seen Spags' defenses look lost in the past only to make adjustments and find a way to improve to semi-respectable.

The reality is we played a NUMBER of close games like this last year and each and every time the ball bounced our way. Now, a lot of that is because we have Mahomes who has papered over endless deficiencies for the last few years, but even as a recently as last week, if Chubb doesn't fumble, do we win that game? What is the narrative like then?

Clyde looks bad. Like, even below the status of a normal JAG running back. But I don't think you can fault Andy for running the ball in that situation. It's not like the guy has a LeSean McCoy recent history of fumbling for you (or at all). It happened. It sucks.

Anyway, guys, this is no different from prior seasons. We can beat any team. We have Mahomes and 99% of the time Clyde isn't fumbling there, Butker kicks a FG, we end up winning the game, and we're all doing cartwheels and looking forward to the Chargers. It didn't happen here, but that doesn't make us materially worse as a football team.

This team ex-Mahomes has been soft. Hopefully this toughens us up. We'll be fine.

I’m not going after him but I have no idea what Patrick was thinking on that pick that changed the game.

That’s 2018 first year starting Patrick. I can only think he’s competing against Lamar and wants to try to make amazing plays like him. Just get the dub Patrick

Ain’t no blaming the refs for this one, we shit the bed all by ourselves

Mahomes, the receivers, the O line and Mathieu showed up… but everyone else was AWOL, I cant WAIT to blow up that defense next spring

Other than Jones, you have to go back to Jared Allen, a whole generation and a half of football players, for a pro bowl caliber defensive end or tackle taken after the first round. We just seem to whiff all the time.

Well, first off, don't leave a nice pocket like that, just get rid of it, pick up 6 yards and decide on fourth down what you wanna do.

Or just take the sack and punt.

He thought he could step out of the tackle. He just got tripped up and forced the throw.

It's rare but when you have a QB that talented you have to live with those mistakes sometimes.

Yup, we've officially become Patriots fans.

I can only imagine when the Patriots visited Arrowhead in September 2014 and we beat them 42-14 rushing for 207yds and Alex throwing 3 TDs that the threads on PatriotsPlanet were pretty similar. Brady is done! Fire Belichick!

And then they went out and won a SB that year and two more for good measure.

But the sky has officially fallen at Arrowhead.

Yeah, I'm definitely not that guy. I am, however, still very grumpy about the game last night. I'll be over it by the time the Ryder Cup comes around later this week. I'll be at Friday's opening round at Whistling Straits.

Meh. Lost a game on the road in prime time to one of the best teams in the AFC by 1 point after getting into field goal range and ready to run out the clock for the win. All due to a fumble. It happens. No time to freak out.

Very true. Each year, we have an “OMG we suck” moment.

Maybe it just came early this year.

Last year: definitely the Raider loss
Super Bowl year: the Texans and Titans losses
2018: probably the loss to the Chargers
2017: losing 6 of 7 to some bad teams
2016: getting blown out by the Steelers
2015: losing 5 straight

Andy seems to just get it figured out. Each year, we still make the playoffs. We’ve won the division the last 5 years. We only have 1 blowout loss with Reid and Mahomes.

We’ll be in the postseason with the best QB on the planet and a chance to win every game. Can’t realistically ask for much more than that.

It does happen, but it's how it happened that's frustrating.
I can forgive the interception and the fumble. It's harder to forgive the bad tackling, (hell lack of tackling and flat out whiffs) because it has been an on-going problem for years. It was hard to count how many times our secondary was out of place or missed their assignments last night. With the exception of HB, the rest looked lost and slow. I was hoping to see some defensive adjustments at halftime but they didn't seem to make any changes.
Last nights defensive performance somewhat reminded me of the Raiders game at Arrowhead last year when the defense could not make adjustments.
Is that coaching, players, or a combination of both? It seems like it should be more of priority to get fixed, but to me it looks like the defense may have actually regressed. It's infuriating to watch.

Meh, at this point I'm just tired of arguing the point.

For the longest, the narrative was that anything short of championships was utterly unacceptable and that having a franchise QB was imperative BECAUSE IT MADE THE REST EASIER.

And my counter was, when we got to competent level QBing, we still weren't good enough AS A FRANCHISE to assure championships.

Now we have the best QB in the history of the sport, and the rest of the franchise is still mediocre, a lot of key aspects of the franchise are presently abysmal, and it's costing us games, and the narrative now is 'hey pretty passes' and 'at least we have A CHANCE.'

It's still a team sport, and having the best QB in history hasn't made us bulletproof, and it hasn't made our deficiencies any easier to overcome.

But it's fun, so I guess just have fun . . .

I'm very 'end game', so pre-Mahomes I sort of understood the freak outs because those people generally thought "just get into the playoffs and anything can happen"... and that logic is mostly wrong in the NFL, but I could at least see why people would freak out about issues that could cause the team to miss the playoffs.

Then you have a year like 2003 where the board was sort of divided on the whole defense thing... everyone knew it sucked, but some were completely freaking out about it, I assume it part because they finally had a window of opportunity to win a SB and it was going to be wasted due to the worst defense in the history of sports.

So, in that regard, really the only reason the sky should be falling outside of Mahomes getting seriously hurt is wasting what could be a 20 year window of opportunity to win some SBs. So, if we're going to pin that on the defense, it seems a little premature to say the least.

They're going to make the playoffs most every year (AFCCG with Sutton, SB with that offensive line, etc.), many AFFCGs, and some Super Bowls. If we look back in a decade and say, well shit, they only won that one... guess I should have been angrier for all those years?
