That's the issue. If Ford is such an essential piece to a Super Bowl in 2019, there's literally no reason to not just give him a contract.

Unless of course you're worried about inconsistency or injury and well, now you've made my point for me.

If Brandon Graham got what he got in Philly, guys are gonna get paid alot on the market.

Even with a low first year cap hit, you've still got to extend it out. Then you're getting into bringing in a guy you don't really know as well, on a long term deal, not really knowing how he fits in your scheme or locker room.

Thats one plus to Collins is that we know how he fits in this scheme.

No, but history suggests that depending on him to repeat 2018 is unlikely.

Again, it's like placing a bet. You're betting on Ford to do something he's literally never done. I'm not.

Why? And spent on what? Less productive players because they're cheaper?

Actually, there's a chance Ansah gets hurt too. Of course there is.

The difference is with Ford's money, they could sign Ansah AND another player. Maybe even two.

The chances of all of them getting hurt? Virtually NIL.

I'd much rather use what i could get from a Ford trade and just trade and sign Clowney to a long term deal than sign any of those free agents to a long term deal.

History also suggests that F/A signings don't always work out as well you had hoped.

History suggests that Ansah can't stay healthy either.

History suggests that Flowers can't break 8 sacks in a season.

SS cover TE's, close off slant routes in zone coverages, and yes, play run support. All things we were laughably bad at, yet you guys think a guy that maybe gets 3 or 4 INT's all year is more impactful?

Are you all the same guys that insisted Marcus Peters is an elite corner because turnovers? You guys STILL think so?

No man. There is so much to a good defensive team that just measuring SACKS or just measuring INT's as your whole concept of a player's worth is dumb.

It's the equivalent of a slow, plodding, shitty defensive first baseman that hit 30 home runs....but hit .220. So he ****s your team several different ways, but holy shit, did you see that homer?!

It's dumb.
Name of the game in today’s NFL is taking the ball away. Why are we paying a safety big money that isn’t good at that?

Landon had one good season. Not worth the investment with a strong safety class IMO

I think you're just assuming that Ansah won't get paid well.

Collins is a really good player. A potential all pro player.

But as we just saw multiple teams do last year with the free agent safety class, you can go get a guy that may not be as good as Landon, for a hell of alot less money and have the other money to improve other areas.
He's a 3 time all-pro, not a 'potential' all pro. He's 25 years old. He's a playmaker. To argue otherwise is stupid.

That's why you spend money to acquire more players. Spread the risk.

Or just spend it all on Dee Ford and watch it go up in smoke.
