How do you define a sports dynasty and what does this current Chiefs team need to do

Been considering this a bit lately. Generally speaking I’d have considered any sports team that wins three championships in a five-ish year period a true dynasty.

The Patriots have two, obviously, early 2000s and then the mid 2010s. Early 90s Cowboys. 49ers in the 80s and Steelers in the 70s, IIRC.

Then I was considering things and wondering what we’d need to accomplish in order to be labeled a dynasty. We’ve currently got the one Super Bowl win from the 2019 season. It’s now the 2022 season.

We’ve hosted four straight AFCCGs in that timespan as well. Does that factor in at all or is it solely based on Super Bowl wins?

I think it does a bit. For example, if we’re able to win the Super Bowl this year, I think I would consider us a dynasty.

But I don’t consider the 90s Bills a dynasty so clearly at least one or two actual Super Bowl wins is a requirement.

What are your thoughts?

If we win this SB, its a moot point. Under any evaluation or opinion the Chiefs will be a dynasty.

The Oakland Athletics won three consecutive world titles in the 70s the Yankees got three in a row in the late 90s. In football you have to go back to the 60s Packers to get three consecutive.

Cowboys came close in 1994. Lost to SF in the title game (the real Super Bowl).

We'll leave at those teams to keep it prior to 1996. If we consider all of those teams to have been dynasties from 1961-2000, that means that every NFL championship or Super Bowl was won by a dynasty team except for the following years:

1963
1964
1968
1969
1970
1985
1986
1990

That's it. Out of 35 seasons, a non-dynasty team won the title in just 8 seasons.

Shouldn't the label of "dynasty" imply a team set apart from the run of the mill winners? Given how few run of the mill winners there were over 35 years, it seems like the "dynasty" label was given out like participation ribbons and "dynasty" meant above average.
I don’t see how the 70s Cowboys can be considered a dynasty. They went 2-3 in the Super Bowl

I just used the teams listed by others in articles that I found. You're right that their success was watered down, but I can make an argument against virtually any of the teams considered to be dynasties.

1960's Packers played in a much smaller league. No salary cap, no free agency.

1970's Steelers had just 1 playoff win and 0 Super Bowl appearances in between their twin back-to-back titles. No free agency. No salary cap.

1980's 49ers success was pretty diluted. They went back-to-back in 1988 and 1989 and had 3 other titles in the period from 1981-1994, but they also missed the playoffs with a sub .500 record in 1982. They failed to win a single playoff game between their title wins in 1984 and 1988. They had 0 title game appearances between their titles in 1989 and 1994. Five titles in 14 seasons is pretty good, but they had very limited success in the off years. No salary cap.

1990's Cowboys was a very limited time span. They had virtually no success whatsoever in the years leading up to or after their title run. No salary cap.

Nothing better than a debate about definitions of the words used in sports debates.

I think the question is, is there a IRS tax form on which you have to check a box that your favorite NFL team has achieved enough to be labeled a dynasty and is that a plus or minus on total tax liability?

Plain and simple, If Chiefs beat the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, it will bring enduring joy to Chiefs Kingdom like winning Super Bowls LIV and LVII has.

And if the result is like Super Bowl LV, it will be a bummer that lingers until Chiefs win another Super Bowl.

Otherwise, the back and forth is meaningless.
