Teicher: No sign yet that Bowe will bounce back

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs made their decision on Dwayne Bowe for better or for worse last year when they signed him to a lucrative, long-term contract.

They didn’t get their money’s worth from their No. 1 wide receiver last year, when he had the worst statistical full season of his career. Bowe failed to lead the Chiefs in receiving for the first time since they traded Tony Gonzalez after the 2008 season.

But in part because of Bowe’s big contract, the Chiefs were limited in their ability to pursue a receiver in free agency. The only wide receiver likely to make the regular-season roster who wasn’t with the Chiefs last season is rookie Albert Wilson, an undrafted free agent.

So their best chance to see dramatic improvement at the position may rest with Bowe. He had a tough day at practice on Wednesday, dropping a pair of passes and deflected another for an interception.

That’s hardly an indication that Bowe won’t rebound this season. But he hasn’t had a great camp and the Chiefs may be guilty of wishful thinking when it comes to their top wide receiver.

Bowe in September will turn 30, the age when the skills of many receivers start their decline. Could it be that process has already started with Bowe?

We’ll find out soon. Chiefs wide receivers coach David Culley said Bowe is in much better shape than he was last summer. Bowe said he’s in the best shape of his career.

“I know from last year, it’s completely different,’’ said Culley, who in his second season with the Chiefs. “Thirty is a mindset. There’s old 30s and there’s young 30s. Which 30 do you want to be? When he came back, he came back as a young 30 and that’s what you have to do to play in this league for a long time.’’

The Chiefs need Culley to be right. If he’s not, it would be obvious the Chiefs made the wrong decision last year on Bowe.

It may be but I remember the off season when everyone was screaming to pay Bowe whatever he wants.

Why do you care its not your $? / CP

It is very possible Bowe just had a down year and could tear it up this season.

We will see.

I guess if he cold block down field, run sloppy routes, drop a few, and catch 40 balls he'd be worth 50 million.....

It isn't an issue of Bowe having to "bounce back". Bowe is the same guy he has always been. The issue is whether Alex is going to throw the ball to receivers like Bowe and whether Reid wants him to. With the exception of one half of one game, it looks like coach and QB prefer to play it safe.

One of the best WRs Kansas City has had since Otis Taylor and yet everyone here is ready to run his ass out of town because he's got dreadlocks and points to name on the jersey.

Bowe got lucky that he hit right between the administration change.

Previous administrations have been reluctant to give him big dollars. Dorsey/Reid only could make the decision from the outside.

If Bowe had come up for a contract a year later, Dorsey/Reid probably wouldn't have given him the big money either.

Guys like him who are good at jump-ball, possession receiver kind of stuff are the type of players that bad QBs will typically lean on. Someone like Cassel was fairly successful at getting the ball to Bowe because he is better able than most receivers to go get all the inaccurate and ill-advised throws.

Bowe had one of his most productive seasons in 2008, when the team went 2-14 and he was catching chuckducks from Tyler Thigpen.

Dude..

Now just imagine what he could do with a QB that throws accurate passes.

What makes me chuckle is that people can read an Adam Teicher article and immediately respond with the "BAH GAWD HE'S RIGHT!!" response. Not sure how many of you have paid attention in the past 25 years or so of him covering the Chiefs, but he has never, and I mean EVER, been a particular fan of the Chiefs. He always sees the dark cloud behind the silver lining, no matter the situation.

Bowe could end up having a 1,400 yard season with 12 TD's, and Teicher would focus on how he dropped a critical third down pass in week 6 that led to us losing by one, labeling him a player we maybe shouldn't lean on, and the masses would just agree wholeheartedly with him.

Idiot

Had nothing to do with dreadlocks, skin color or doing stupid shit. It's about him not really being a great receiver. Bowe is a good guy, great athlete and physical stud but he's not a polish receiver. He's also either undisciplined or not very bright ... maybe just kind of lazy.

He's put a lot of rather empty numbers up during his time in KC.

The colts game might be his first time of really stepping up in crunch time. Even then he failed on what would have been the game winning game catch down the sideline.

This isn't personal, i don't dislike Bowe.

It's about production and being an impact player like his salary demands. It's also about how people like you who refused to hold him accountable about anything at all.

Nothing is ever Bowe's fault ... ever. Every drop is on the QB, every wrong route is on the QB or the coach or just ignore it. He is open every play and it's just the rest of the dam that's screwing up.

Bowe is the best receiver to ever play in the NFL dammit!!!

Bowe is not perfect. Neither are Calvin Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald. I also remember a wide open Jerry Rice dropping a sure touchdown at Arrowhead (and before Laz shits his diaper - no, I am NOT saying Bowe is any of those guys). He's made his share boneheaded plays and WTF moments. He's also shown he can be a force when he's in the groove.

Bowe is actually a lot like Alex Smith. He's a guy that obviously has talent and playmaking potential, but was never in a position to succeed early in his career due to being on shitty teams and having so much upheaval with his coaches. Feel free to hate on him all you want (and the thing about him "not living up to his contract" makes me laugh. It's not like Bowe went to the Chiefs saying this is want I want so give it to me, and they did. Be pissed at the Chiefs for that contract, not Bowe), but I am really looking forward to what he can do in this offense with a full season under his belt.
