You can't really assess free agents until after the season. Some guys will be available that don't appear to be now, solely because of the cap ramifications.

The Browns cap is a mess in 23, they're gonna have to let some guys go. I can't imagine they wouldn't wanna keep Wills right?

True.

Speaking of, there's some teams who's cap is just wrecked next year. The Panthers are currently 11 million over the cap next year.

Seriously though, if you are Carolina you have to try and offload McCaffrey and or some other vets.

You're currently over the cap next year, you have 4 picks to rebuild, AND you fired your coach and staff.

I mean, ****.

If you'd said before drafting Mahomes that we would have both PM2 and Baker come 2023 I'd call you an idiot.

Could happen after this year. Baker will be out there and we'll need a b/u. Baker has had fewer suitors than Melanie Griffith lately. I could see getting him cheap, letting Andy rehab his image, perhaps flip him in a year or two for a mid round pick.

If Andy's good at anything it's perfuming turds...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

There's no more "rehabbing" QB's for Andy here though. They have to actually play and that ain't happening.

A couple preseason and week 18 performances, then wait for someones starter to get hurt mid season. Then unzip.

If our division doesn't get it together we won't have to play Pat after week 12...

They've gotta trade Burns. And almost certainly Moore. I don't see any way around it.

Look at the guys they have on that cap next season. Those are NOT easy contracts to get out of.

You can spin your way out of Elfein pretty easily and clear $5 million. Moton is sitting on signing and restructure bonuses that will accelerate not to mention $11 million in guaranteed salary next season. That's a $24 million cap hit that's damn near inescapable.

McCaffrey could be cut and you'd save $12 million in base but you'd accelerate a bunch onto of signing and restructure bonuses as well. It would help you for 2024 but only gains you about 4 million in space in 2023. Honestly, it may still be necessary.

Shaq Thompson is cut, but it's gonna hurt - freeing up $24 million but accelerating $11 million onto the cap. Still a no-brainer for a cut that should get them about $13 million in space. Maybe you restructure him and keep him with half that figure but pay for it in 2024 (y'know, pull a 'Clark').

Robbie Anderson is probably another cut; clears about $22 million with $9 million in dead cap; another $13 million or so in space.

Donte Jackson's roster bonuses are guaranteed and his outstanding signing bonuses cost more than his base - he's staying with a $14 million cap hit next year. Austin Corbett's salary is guaranteed but they could probably trade him with minimal damage. They'd have some residual damage in 2024 for their troubles but it may be necessary given their situation.

So presume Thompson and Anderson are cut - that frees up $26 million and brings their number down to about $218 million on a $227 million projected cap. But you figure they'll need about $11 million for their draft picks so now they're back up to $230 million and with still only 40 guys under contract.

You you trade away Burns you'd have $13 million and need 11 guys to get to the 51 player contracts counted for the purposes of the cap. You could probably do that without moving Moore or cutting McCaffrey.

I'd burn it down. The whole thing. See if you can get McCaffrey traded and if not, cut him. See if you can get a 1st for Burns. See if you can get a 1st for Moore.

See if you can get Corbett dealt for a 3rd day pick. Cut Thompson and Robbie Anderson. Cut Elflein. Trade Moton for a 3rd day pick.

They have $9 million in space right now so they can't do all that. Trading Burns now mostly washes - go ahead. Trading Moore now yields a $5 million cap hit. Trading McCaffrey now yields about $7 millon. So you're already out of room.

ALL these guys have low bases this year so moving them in-season frees up very little space but creates accelerations onto the cap.

I'm usually pretty good with this stuff but sweet fancy moses, this is hideous. I don't even know where you find more money. Bonus out Darnold's remaining base into an extension with 2 void years? It would at least allow you to make another trade or two this season instead of waiting until the new league year. Fine, let's do that - $18 million this season wrapped into a 5 year 'extension' with the base turned into signing bonus. Figure there's $14 million of that left or so and for teh sake of easy math let's plow $12 million of it into the 2023 cap via those years voiding out. So you've found an additional $12 million that would let you get Burns, McCaffrey and Moore traded this year, theoretically maximizing their value on the market. You could probably sneak a Corbett deal in there as well.

This is a Gordian knot. The more I do, the more tangled it gets.

Agree. but at the same time, Burns and Moore are the type of guys you'd like to keep as foundational pieces after the fire as a foundation for the rebuild. As you note, though, maybe that literally can't happen.

You could make it work with Burns but you'd have to guarantee a MASSIVE amount of money to do it. Low year 1 base salary, decent signing bonus but more critically, guaranteed roster bonuses and salaries in years 2-5. It would be the only way to keep the damage to a minimum in 2023.

It would be harder with Moore, IMO, because he's on a team friendly deal and would want that thing torn up to reflect changes in the WR market if he were to restructure.

They MIGHT be able to trade Moore and come up with a deal that hurts badly in the long-run with Burns and carries enormous risk, but is palatable enough in year 1 to fit him on the cap in 2023 before the massive amounts of dead money you're about to take on fall off for 2024.

Phew...it's really not pretty.
