There won't be a fight because at least 1 at large spot will be reserved for non-super conference teams, and they will be able to get as many as 4 teams in. It will be very similar to the way the BCS system works now.

As far as the liability goes, you've got a better shot of getting in the playoffs by winning a 12 team conference than a 16 team conference. If you're absolutely one of the 4 power conferences, you're fine. If you're on the fringe (ACC versus Big XII), it's a scramble to get more teams and make sure that you are the fourth conference.

If playing for the National Championship required being a member of a major conference (which appears to be what is happening) then it would obviously mean playing games against the Big 12 opponents.

Thought you were smart enough to know this but guess not. Didn't think it was that complex.

So those games that they have scheduled under their NBC contract just...???

Oh hai guyz. Notre Dame can just keep their existing contract and get our tier 1 money and be part of our conference and play 12 games scheduled against non-Big XII teams and play a Big XII conference schedule and endowments and it's so American!!!

The money is going to be so big there will be a huge disparity in revenues. It's hard to see how there won't be a huge fit over this.

There has always been a huge disparity in revenues. Look at the Sunbelt. Hell, look at FCS.

I don't really see the difference between that and teams like MU and Texas A&M bailing on their conference opponents.

Then again games involving those teams are worth a fraction of what a game against Notre Dame is. So I can see why they can move much easier than ND... Guess we agree.

But actually yes, the contract would probably play out fine. Heard today that the way the Big 12 TV deal is structured forces FOX/ESPN to increase their payout to the member schools when additional schools join.

Unlike the SEC deal that has no interest in paying more money to each school because of MU and A&M joining.

I guess the difference would be that aTm and Mizzou didn't get to keep the revenues they would have otherwise received whereas you're saying that Notre Dame could keep their NBC contract while bailing on their contracted games.

Awesome. So Notre Dame will play out their scheduled games AND a full slate of Big XII games. You are just full of smartness.

No, the games would obviously need to change.

The contract would not exist in the current state that it does now.

But yes, the NBC deal with Notre Dame will exist in some form once they join the Big 12.

I don't think ND will ever give up their independent status, though.

Greg Swaim ‏ @ GSwaimI'm told that # ND will jump in # Big12 very soon with Olympic sports, and then football joins after TV contract expires. # BlowsMyMind The # ND deal apparently was a catalyst for getting # FSU aboard all along. This thing is happening fast now for the # Big12

Honestly, I don't think ND is going anywhere, if I had to bet $100 on it right now, I'd say they stay independent because I don't think the conference champs model is going to fly. I used to think so, but this Big 12-SEC thing is a game changer. Not only will the Big 12 probably line up under the Slive plan, but they have an ace in the hole: they can now just tell the Big 10/PAC 12 "well F it then, we can't agree, lets just do the plus 1 plan" (where everyone secretly thinks the winners of the Rose Bowl/game-yet-to-be-named-but-probably-going-to be-played-at-Jerryworld will be the participants) If we do top-4 then Notre Dame has a viable path to the championship game if they go undefeated.

I don't think the Big 12 will be opposed to the top 4, because the conference champs model would have screwed them several times in the last 10 years. If they wont budge, we'll just do plus one until they throw up their hands and say "fine, we'll do it your way"
