MEDIA REACTIONS: Chiefs Early Draft Losers on NFLN

Quote:
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs had pressing needs after a rough free agency, and they still have massive questions on the offensive line and at wide receiver. Dee Ford is a nice long-term gamble, but should start his career as a part-time player. Third-round cornerback Phillip Gaines seems more like a developmental prospect. Fourth-round RB/WR/return/cornerback/football player De'Anthony Thomas is a wild card. This was a draft in which the Chiefs needed some instant-impact players, and it's hard to see them here.

I can agree with that, there was no balls out push to win it all this year.

But IMO, even a big FA spending spree or taking two each of receivers and safeties wouldn't have guaranteed that kind of success... if things play out the way the braintrust thinks, this isn't gonna be some lost season due to a tough schedule.

We're gonna be competitive throughout, just watch MM... its no longer a first year regime training up first year players in this system, there is some cohesiveness now, there is some depth now.

That's what I have a problem with… I don't understand why the Chiefs… coming off 11 wins, 8 Pro Bowl players, etc. are content with taking steps back to rebuild, rather than trying to aggressively build on last year's success.

Why people give a shit about day after grades evades me. I will have to check but I am pretty sure nobody wrote how the Patriots drafted one of the greatest QBs when they took Brady in the 6th round or when the Chiefs signed a punter named Deron Cherry. There are countless players taken who later surpassed expectations. It is a crap shoot plain and simple~

Last year's success was a schedule-enabled fluke. Hindsight may be 50/50, but even you should have seen that. This team is winning jack and shit with its current setup, and it didn't have enough cap flexibility to bring in enough players to create a team stacked enough to overcome its limitations at QB.

The biggest mistake they've made this offseason, aside from what I see as a mediocre draft, is not tearing it down enough. Hali and Flowers should have been shipped for picks if they aren't in the plans for 2015.

You want a half-assed approach to getting them over the top, Carl Peterson 1998-style. They decided to engage in a half-assed rebuilding project.

You may not agree about Smith, I'm not sure, but I feel he qualifies as a "franchise QB" considering how he played down the stretch... Reid may have been right about the guy all along, he might be the perfect guy to run this system.

As you always say "give me a franchise QB, a top 10 defense and I'll take my chances"... and I agree... with a few tweaks, most notably the replacement of Lewis and some quality depth, we could certainly approach top 10 D.

It just seems to me that just because our collective fan plan didn't play out, doesn't mean that the guys who get paid to do this didn't have a plan all along. They really must feel that most of their second year guys are ready to jump, I just sincerely don't buy this idea that prideful professionals like these two aren't planning to win every year.

I'm disappointed we didn't find a receiver or safety the same as most, but that doesn't mean I don't think these two men aren't seeing something the rest of us don't and that they have written off 2014... that tack just doesn't make sense to me viewing it from their perspective.
They haven't written off 2014. If they did that, they'd have a fire sale, especially stopgap players like Fasano and Daniel, even Hali and Flowers who could easily be cut and save a shitload of cap space. Otherwise they'd have no need to stopgap a guy like Joe Mays. Even if they are rebuilding, they are still putting a competitive product on the field. I think we'll be better in 2014 than last year, but I also think we're setting up a really big run by 2015 if we play our cards right.

I can see that. But this grading of a draft group is mostly about sex appeal, and by that account we sure didn't deserve much credit.

Thanks for bolstering my original point... whoever it was that said "remodel not rebuild" a few days ago, needs some rep.

Fair point, but this team could still be better than last year's and have a decent shot at making the playoffs, and have a longshot chance at a run. If we get the second half of the season's offense and a better defense. I don't mind hanging on to Flowers and Hali to ease the transition of our young guys especially since there's a lot of dead money to cut these guys now.

Keep in mind that we still have next offseason to ship these guys, even if they're a year older. I wouldn't mind trying to negotiate with both these guys in good faith for a reasonable contract and trading them if they ask for too much.

I must be crazy, drunk on the Kool-Aid, or a bit of both because I really like this year's draft on a number of different levels.

And I'm not getting rid of Daniel, either. Bray, on the other hand, is about to exit the building, assuming he cannot be put on the PS.

It's not a foregone conclusion that '14 is going to be a dumpster fire. At this point, I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt in terms of progress to a coach like Reid. He has a track record that deserves this.

Yes, last's year success was artificial because of the schedule. Yes, this year's schedule looks like a mother****er...

But, but...if INDY Smith is real Smith, this is going to go a long way to ensuring that this team is successful, schedule be damned.

Yeah, that's a good comment. And it will work if Dorsey executes well. Not a bad accomplishment to field a competitive product while at the same time giving tremendous long-term cap relief and setting ourselves up for possibly 11 picks in 2015.

That being said, there's a lot of work to do. At least Dorsey proved he can draft, but let's see how these players shake out. The part of Dorsey that still scares me is, he seems to have a good strategy and understand personnel, but he looks really green when it comes to negotiating contracts. I just hope that's not his achilles heels because we will need free agency one day and we have some huge contract extensions coming up.

Very much this, it appears to be outside of his comfort zone.

This. I've never heard a team describe as bleak a situation a team being in as we've heard this off-season. Obviously me head isn't in their books and I don't know all the rules, but after this very vanillas sounding draft one can only hope these selections turn out to be a lot better than anybody ever expected.
