****Official Weight Loss and Exercise Thread****

I know that TinyE has the CP Weight Loss Challenge thread, but this is a new beginning for me. No losing weight for prizes, as that motivation ended on July 1st. This time I'm doing it for me. My goal is 75 lbs. Slow and steady wins the race. This time, the prize will be a whole new me.

Anyone else still battling the bulge? Here, hopefully, you can find more encouragement and tips on diet and exercise. Feel free to talk about discouragements, setbacks, frustrations, etc as well. We're here to help...at least I am.

yeah it is kind of ridiculous what people think is healthy eating. I was the same way before I started reading everything I could about diet and nutrition.

FTR, those Steamers actually aren't terribly bad, but they shouldn't be a substitute for your meats and greens and other living products.

I don't know. I probably shouldn't talk, because I've never had a problem dropping pounds when I want. That being said, I cook for my wife. She's dropped more weight when we're following the "Eat food. Not too much. Mainly vegetables" than anything else. Just by buying actual food: veggies, grains, beans, and such (stick to the outer aisles) instead of processed crap, we've both maintained slim builds. I still eat crap on occasion (hello chili burger), but it's the daily habits that I try to monitor.
I really need to eat more veggies myself. When I'm watching what I eat, I tend to eat less red meat. Green leafy veggies will help make sure I'm getting enough iron.

I hate green leafy veggies. I am trying to work on different ways to mix them into my diet.... but they are just awful to me.

I jog about 2 miles in the morning on weekdays. I'm not much of a runner, so I take breaks, but I get through it 9 days out of 10. It's only a 20-30 minute commitment. In the evening I work out for an hour.

My diet is not especially choosy, but no fast food, very rarely any fried food, no soda and no alcohol. I think those last two are the biggest things.

This keeps me in balance. It's hard to do all I would like to because my schedule's always busy and in flux.

One of my favorite versatile preps for greens and beans from Mark Bittman:

Presoak beans (overnight or quick soak).
Put beans in pot, cover with water.
Cut a slice in a whole onion. Stuff with a couple of bay leaves and a couple of cloves. Place in pot with beans.
Bring to boil.
Simmer 30 minutes.
As beans begin to become tender, salt them.
Cook another 15 minutes or so and add kale/turnip greens/chard/spinach.
Cook another 15 minutes until greens and beans are both tender.

The real magic is in the finish, though. Mince up a tablespoon or two of garlic. In the final two minutes of cooking, throw in the fresh garlic and a heavy round or two of olive oil.

Top with diced tomatoes.

Now, you can do this with any combination of beans and any combination of greens. Alter the topping according to preference (tomatoes, avocado, onions, whatever). This is a badass, versatile recipe that is so simple, pure, and delicious.

I'm not fat (maybe a little pudgy), but I used to be so so fit, muscular. I miss it. I hear what you're saying, I really do. I just can't seem to get motivated.

My husband says when working on carving out a statue from a rock, just start chiseling the toe first....my problem with diet and exercise is I'm not sure which toe to start working on.

Definitely helps if you can find good greens. The shitty kale from Wally World doesn't really do it justice.

That's been my whole philosophy for the last few years. Good quality ingredients treated as minimally and simply as possible. Let the ingredients speak for themselves.

Try the third toe from the left on your right foot.

I started on the second toe from the left, and I think I would have been better with the third toe for sure.

The first thing is to quit beating yourself up for the past. You shouldn't want to cry... you should want to change.
