****Official Weight Loss and Exercise Thread****

I know that TinyE has the CP Weight Loss Challenge thread, but this is a new beginning for me. No losing weight for prizes, as that motivation ended on July 1st. This time I'm doing it for me. My goal is 75 lbs. Slow and steady wins the race. This time, the prize will be a whole new me.

Anyone else still battling the bulge? Here, hopefully, you can find more encouragement and tips on diet and exercise. Feel free to talk about discouragements, setbacks, frustrations, etc as well. We're here to help...at least I am.

Yeah, you probably still have access to good local greens. Living in the People's Republic does have its advantages.

Always high quality here. Moved the family to Southern Oregon. It's a little harder there. Farmers market doesn't open again until March. Can't get raw whole milk again till February but I still need to look into an alternative source. My kid loves that stuff.

Our market shut down last week as well. Won't open until march. Cool that you moved out to Oregon. I imagine you're happier there than Cali. Love me some Oregon.

I commute believe it or not. I have them down with me in the people's republic righ now. Year round farmers market here. I get the most killer fresh fish there at a GREAT price. Get my sushi fix.

Gonna go on a run here before sundown..prolly only 1.5-2 miles. I got into a routine for about a month where I'd run every day, and I genuinely felt so much better for doing it. Slept better, woke up better, had more energy, etc.

Now I'm returning to a fat, lazy, sleepy blob.

It's ****ing cold outside..but oh well, better to be cold than fat I suppose.

If you get the right gear for it, cold weather running is awesome (even though the first 10 minutes or so sucks) Wind is always brutal, but I'm always amazed at how warm I get when I run in the cold. Even though they may feel gay as hell, tights are awesome for running in the cold. Gloves are also essential.

I shouldn't be lecturing, because I haven't gotten off my fat ass and run in a while either, but I usually do run through the winter.

My new year’s resolution will be (among other thigns) losing about 40-50lbs by the end of July.

Strangely enough, I decided not to ‘wait’ until new years to ‘start’.
My first step is to stop drinking so much GD beer. Lol.
Second – stop eating large lunches
Third – eating a reasonably portioned meal.

My problem was I would do all three of those in excess. I would drink beer nightly; have a few beers after work, and maybe one after dinner. It would be nothing to go through a 30 pack per week. My dinners would be huge; my lunches would be huge.

So far, I can really tell. It’s only been about 6 days…so maybe it’s my brain playing tricks on me. I haven’t weighed myself, but I ‘feel’ better. Especially around the gut area. Plus, I’m sleeping better (which I haven’t done in 9 years).

It’s been a little bit of shock – eating a salad for lunch or something small etc; and not having a cold beer(s) after work. I think most of it is habit – so the no beer thing is improving each night. I’m going to try to avoid having a beer until x-mas. Then avoid it again until the Superbowl; avoid again until around April/draft time frame. All the while, eating better/smaller portions.

I don’t think I can bring myself to start exercising just yet. I’ll probably start that Jan-2010. That will be interesting. I used to work out 5 days a week in the navy etc…but having lifted weights since – so I imagine I’ll have remember to start a little small and work my way up.

I’m about 240 now; would like to get down to 225 (or less) by the end of Jan with an ultimate goal to get down to 190 with some muscle.
I also need to come up with activities to do when it’s cool/warm out etc. I was thinking about try disc golf? Seems like it would be good exercise, and not as expensive or infuriating as when I play golf. Lol. Or maybe taking my dogs on walks much more often. What do you guys do for activities?

My problem is time. I make time one night a week to play volleyball, but can't get to work out any other times. I wake up with my daughter at 6:30 or 7 (can't get up earlier and go work out if my husband is working that day), get her ready, me ready and her to the sitter and me to work, stay at work til 5 or 5:30pm....get home, she's only up til 7:30 or 8pm and that's all the time I get with her in the week....by the time I give her a bath, get her to bed, I have maybe an hour to myself to unwind. I take time for lunch, but by the time I get tot he gym, get dressed, work out, take a shower and get dressed again....I only have about 25 min to really work out?

I know I've asked before, but any suggestions?

gals I used to work with used to drink their lunch via protein shakes (or whatever their called) and walk during lunch - just circling the office building/walking around the outer edge of the parking lot.
Maybe until things are a little less hectic you can squeeze in a brisk walk or something?

I get up at 5:00am 2-3 days a week to workout due to the fact I have to get it in before my kids wake up. My wife then goes to workout when I get back from the gym. We both go on Saturdays for an hour, because our gym has childcare. It's hard, though. If I don't get the workout done before the kids wake up, I won't do it. I'm like you at night. I have about 30 minutes to an hour before bedtime after the kids go to bed. I want to spend that time relaxing and unwinding, not working out.

It's hard.

25 minutes at lunch is enough time, as is an hour in the evening. You don't need to devote a two hour block of time to it. Just stay on task while you are there.

Anything is an improvement.
