Teicher: Dorsey says Chiefs could draft Joeckel and re-sign Albert

Dorsey says Chiefs could draft Joeckel and re-sign Albert
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star
General manager John Dorsey said Saturday the Chiefs might select Texas A&M’s Luke Joeckel with the first pick in the draft even if they re-sign Branden Albert, their incumbent left tackle. Dorsey said the Chiefs would draft the highest-rated player they have on their board regardless of his position.

“Then you have great competition at left tackle,’’ said Dorsey, speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine, of the combination of re-signing Albert and drafting Joeckel . “Who’s to say both of those guys are locked in to playing left tackle? Maybe one plays left guard, center, right guard, right tackle. You put your best five offensive linemen out there.

“There are so many options out there right now. Anything is possible.’’

Another interesting option for the Chiefs is Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones, who had 28 sacks over the past two seasons. The Chiefs already have Pro Bowlers at outside linebacker in Tamba Hali and Justin Houston.

“They’re both pretty good players,’’ Dorsey said of the incumbents. “But who’s to say you couldn’t acquire another outside linebacker and what you could do is begin to rotate them. What you do is you make that unit better because they’re all fresher. They’re not on the field pounding all the time. That’s the thing about building quality depth. You can make your guys fresher in the fourth quarter.’’

A run stopping ILB is a 1-down player nowadays whereas an ILB who can cover is 2 down player at minimum and depending on the team playing/gameplan, probably 3.

Richardson is great at getting upfield from the 3 tech
, which given the way the NFL is, that's where he'll not only get a majority of his snaps but also where he'll be expected to produce the most.
I agree with the bold, but Richardson doesn't play "big" enough to fill a role like Watt.

In this draft, those guys are in the middle rounds.

There is no JJ Watt in this class. There's not even a Justin Smith or Richard Seymour.

The pass rushers in this draft are almost all 4-3 DEs and 3-4 OLBs.

That maybe true. I can say I honestly don't know, I haven't really watched much on the DL this year. Been focused on another spot.

No, he'll never be as good against the run. Additionally, to think Sheldon's getting 20 sacks in a season is probably ridiculous as well. However, I think he's without a doubt the best pass rushing interior lineman in the draft and it really isn't that close. Granted, I haven't really watched much of Floyd as I assumed he'd be long gone.

He should call JJ and ask him for his uhh...personal trainer.

Barkley, Glennon, Smith, and probably Wilson will be gone early and I'd bet teams trade back up to get who's left. I don't really want to be stuck trading back up, because teams know we need a QB and thats a case where we could absolutely get ass raped on a trade up.
I am for whatever positions they want to take as long as we get a Geno, Barkley, Wilson or Nassib (I like him a lot even though most don't) at some point.

We can take Joeckel, Richardson, Floyd, etc at 1 and I'll be fine with it if we get the QB we want at 34.

Part of it is drive. Richardson, while naturally gifted as ****, doesn't have the motor of a guy like Watt. There are times when Richardson allows himself to be invisible, whereas Watt is always present, whether it's with tips or pressures.

The fact that Richardson is even being discussed as a top-15 talent in the draft is evidence to me that the elite talent is shallow in '13, while the overall depth is solid.

Yeah, I don't like Nassib, I think he's got game manager written all over him.

I don't really want to let Albert walk just to take Joeckel at 1. Honestly, at this point I don't think he's the best LT in this draft.

I'm just terrified we try and guess and outguess ourselves and be sitting at 34 with our thumb in our ass having to take our 4th rated QB.

Obviously I'm a Mizzou fan, and I wouldn't even touch Richardson. Dude would be completely off my board because he's a selfish bitch whom you cannot trust.

He fist ****ed Mizzou because of his me-first approach this year.

Exactly.

He's fine with taking anybody else at 1. Well what happens when we get to #34 and we have our choice between Bray and Dysert?

I just don't get it.

When you find a $20 bill on the sidewalk, do you stand there and look at it to make sure it really is a $20 bill and isn't counterfeit or do you ****ing pick it up and put it in your pocket? Because while you're standing there staring at it, the guy 30 steps away already has his mind made up that he's putting it in HIS ****ing pocket.

Definitely. You'll probably see the best players in this draft come from players that are undervalued ala 2009.

Ideally, you'd use Sheldon mainly on subs this year (ala Aldon Smith) until the playoffs/end of the year to keep him fresh, healthy, and give him a good opportunity to get his feet wet without overwhelming him.
