The fan reaction to the past four weeks has distilled something: we don't really care about anything other than seeing one man murdering or torturing dozens of other men. That is the appeal of 24: not as an anti-terrorism drama, not as an anti-War-on-Terrorism polemic, just a show about Jack Bauer ****ing people up. The past few weeks have seen Jack Bauer, blinded with revenge, murder dozens of his own countrymen and close to a dozen Russians, kill a woman point blank in cold blood, perform the most brutal torture session ever shown on network television, dress up like Snake Eyes from G.I. Joe, attack the Secret Service and kidnap a former POTUS all because his pussy got taken away from him. It is every man's fantasy. That is why we watch the show.

That worked as a season finale - a rehash of Season 4's ending for a season full of rehashed plots and characterizations. As a series finale? No, it doesn't work. Guess there is the inevitable movie for that, though.
