THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN KANSAS CITY/PLEASANT HILL HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR MIXED PRECIPITATION AND HEAVY SNOW...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO 6 AM CST WEDNESDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

* LOCATIONS...SOUTHEAST KANSAS AND WESTERN MISSOURI INCLUDING PLEASANT HILL...HARRISONVILLE...WARRENSBURG AND CLINTON.

* TIMING...FREEZING DRIZZLE...LIGHT FREEZING RAIN OR SNOW WILL BE POSSIBLE EARLY MONDAY MORNING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT. SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATING SNOWFALL WILL IMPACT THE REGION LATE MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT.

* SNOW AND ICE ACCUMULATIONS...A LIGHT GLAZE OF ICE UP TO A TENTH OF AN INCH WILL BE POSSIBLE ON MONDAY AND MONDAY NIGHT. STORM TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS BETWEEN 8 AND 12 INCHES MAY BE POSSIBLE THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING WITH HIGHER TOTALS IN SOME LOCATIONS.

* IMPACTS...THIS STORM WILL ARRIVE IN MULTIPLE WAVES. FREEZING DRIZZLE OR LIGHT FREEZING RAIN WILL LEAD TO ICY CONDITIONS ON PRIMARY AND SECONDARY ROADS BY THE MONDAY MORNING COMMUTE. ONCE HEAVY SNOW ARRIVES...ROADS WILL BECOME SNOW COVERED AND TRAVEL WILL BE DIFFICULT TO EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ON TUESDAY. THIS STORM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BRING TRAVEL TO A HALT OVER MUCH OF EASTERN KANSAS AND MISSOURI ON TUESDAY AND TUESDAY NIGHT.

* OTHER IMPACTS...STRONG WINDS BETWEEN 20 AND 35 MPH TUESDAY AFTERNOON WILL CREATE SIGNIFICANT BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW ALONG WITH HIGHLY REDUCED VISIBILITIES INTO TUESDAY NIGHT. NEAR BLIZZARD CONDITIONS WILL BE POSSIBLE ON INTERSTATE 35...HIGHWAY 71...AND HIGHWAY 50. FALLING TEMPERATURES TUESDAY NIGHT WILL PRODUCE WIND CHILL READINGS WELL BELOW ZERO BY WEDNESDAY MORNING.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS.

CONDITIONS CAN DETERIORATE RAPIDLY IN WINTER WEATHER SITUATIONS. SLOW DOWN AND ALLOW EXTRA TIME WHEN TRAVELING. Statement as of 3:56 PM CST on January 30, 2011

... Winter Storm Warning in effect from 6 am Monday to noon CST
Wednesday...

The National Weather Service in St Louis has issued a Winter
Storm Warning for snow... sleet and... and freezing rain... which is in
effect from 6 am Monday to noon CST Wednesday. The Winter Storm
Watch is no longer in effect.

* Timing... a wintry mix of light freezing rain... sleet and snow
will develop by Monday morning and continue in waves through
Monday evening. The wintry mix will change to snow late Monday
night and become heavy at times Tuesday and Tuesday night.

* Accumulations... snow accumulations of of 12 to 18 inches are likely.
Ice accumulations will range from less than 1/10 of an inch in
northeast Missouri to around 2/10 of an inch in parts of central
Missouri.

* Winds... northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph will occur Tuesday
night and Wednesday with gusts to 40 mph.

* Impacts... extremely hazardous Road conditions could limit travel
for days.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning means that 6 inches or more of snow is
expected. The rapid accumulation of snow will make travel
extremely difficult... if not impossible. If travel is necessary...
make sure to exercise caution. Begin your travel with a tank full
of gas... and carry a winter storm kit which includes a shovel...
flashlight... cellphone... and blankets of extra warm clothing.

Strong and gusty winds will combine with snow already on the
ground to produce blowing and drifting that will frequently reduce
visibilities to one-quarter mile or less at times. Snow on grassy
areas will likely blow over roadways... partially covering or
further blanketing the pavement. Snow drifts will likely form near
structures such as homes... cars... or trees and could become
significantly deeper than in areas exposed to the wind and away
from structures. As a result... travel will become hazardous and
motorists should plan for a slower than normal trip... and be on
the lookout for sudden drops in visibility as well as drifting
snow that may impede travel.
