It's not the NFL. It's the NFLPA, the union.

Isn't it all related to the NFLPA wanting verified agents to be the ones representing the players? To protect the players from getting ripped off and exploited I guess.

Agreed. If a player can represent themselves then why not anyone they want? You can take contracts to a lawyer.

I think that's all I need to know to decide between those two.

Becoming an NFLPA certified agent isnt that hard. I might do it.

NFLPA Agent Regulations
Please read the NFLPA Certification Frequently Asked Questions, and email the Salary Cap and Agent Administration Department (agentservices@nflpa.com) if you have any further questions.

Required
Non-refundable Application fee of $2,500.00
Undergraduate AND Post Graduate degree (Masters OR Law) from an accredited college/university OR at least 7 years of sufficient negotiating experience (see FAQs)
Authorization to perform a background investigation
Mandatory attendance at a two (2) day virtual seminar plus an additional day for administration of the exam
Successful completion of a multiple-choice, proctored examination
Valid email address
Download a PDF version of the Regulations
Date to File
The application period is now closed.

Absolutely no early or late filing. For more information on the application approval process, please review the NFLPA Certification Frequently Asked Questions.

Background Check
This entails verification of the information provided on your application, including verification of your education, professional certificates, work experience, civil and criminal history, as well as a review of your social media platforms.

Additionally, you may be contacted by a member of the NFLPA staff if there are any questions or concerns regarding the results of your background check. If so, you will be asked to provide additional details and may be required to provide supporting documentation.

Tip: It is better to disclose anything that may come up during your background investigation within your application for two reasons; (1) to avoid delay in the application process should we be inclined to follow up for additional information and (2) failure to disclose material facts about your history may result in denial of your application. Please note, failure to disclose any material fact may impact the decision to approve or deny your application.

Seminar
The seminar will be held virtually on July 18 and 19, 2023. The examination will be administered at designated testing centers (date TBD). The list of testing centers will be sent to you once your application has been fully vetted.

Examination
The examination will cover the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), the Salary Cap, NFL Player Benefits, NFLPA Regulations Governing Contract Advisors, Substances of Abuse & Performance Enhancing Substances Policies, and other issues relevant to player representation. It is a 60-question multiple-choice examination and has a time limit of three (3) hours. It is an open materials test. All notes and source documents must be printed. You will not have access to electronic documents.

Source documents links needed for the seminar/lecture and examination will be provided several weeks after the application period closes. Some of the documents that are always available on our website are the CBA, the NFLPA Regulations Governing Contract Advisors, the Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances, and the Policy and Program on Substances of Abuse. Examination results will be available approximately eight (8) weeks after testing. A passing score is a scaled score of 70 or higher. As per the Regulations, you are prohibited from recruiting or representing any players until you have been notified that you have passed the exam, paid the required NFLPA Agent annual fee, and obtained the required liability insurance.

Certification
If certification is granted, continued compliance with the Regulations is required to maintain your certification. Compliance includes, but is not limited to:

Paying an annual fee
Obtaining professional liability insurance from the approved carrier (more information to follow)
Attending one of three NFLPA seminars held each year.
Negotiate at least one player contract within a three-year period (Practice Squad contracts not included).
Additionally, you are required to notify the NFLPA of all changes to your submitted application.

Because it behooves the players and Players Union that some moron isn't out there agreeing to sub market deals ****ing the other players on future contracts. Previous contracts set the market for new contracts.

Same reason teams are pissed at Cleveland for giving Watson that reeruned deal.

I don't think it will happen. Just saying it would make alot of sense in what type of back we're looking for.

ESPN NFL "experts" mostly like our free agent pickups so far

What was the best bargain signing of free agency?

Matt Miller, NFL draft analyst: DE Charles Omenihu to the Kansas City Chiefs. Omenihu comes in on a two-year deal worth $16 million and will fill the roster spot left by Frank Clark. Omenihu had 4.5 sacks in 2022 and gives the Chiefs big-time versatility up front.

Jason Reid, senior Andscape writer: S Mike Edwards to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs got the former Buccaneers starter on a cheap, one-year deal, and he will be a great (and cost-effective) addition to the secondary. He had two interceptions and 82 tackles last season.

Mike Tannenbaum, NFL front office insider: Omenihu to the Chiefs. He is a young, ascending pass-rusher who comes to Kansas City for $16 million over two years. That's great value.

Field Yates, NFL analyst: LB Drue Tranquill to the Kansas City Chiefs. Tranquill is coming off of clearly his best season, in which he made an impact all over the field. The Chiefs did not necessarily have a glaring need at linebacker, but their front office continues to stand out in finding players at varying price points to beef up a ready-to-repeat roster. Tranquill will really help.

Which was the best overall free agent signing?

Moody: OT Jawaan Taylor to the Kansas City Chiefs. The soon-to-be 25-year-old is entering his prime and expected to play left tackle for Kansas City. The Chiefs will probably address the right side of their offensive line at next month's draft, but providing the top quarterback in the game blindside protection is never a bad idea. Taylor was one of the best tackles available on the market.

One dissenter

What was the most head-scratching signing of free agency?

Walder: OT Jawaan Taylor to the Kansas City Chiefs. Taylor is a fine pass-protector, but he's not elite. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence's quick release made Taylor look better than he is last season. And Taylor is a weakness in the run game. If he plays left tackle, he's a downgrade from Orlando Brown Jr., but he's getting more money per year than Brown signed for in Cincinnati.
