Ok, here we go, scouting reports on the 3 guys we all like :
First off CB Carlos Rogers from Auburn : Carlos Rogers College: Auburn Height: 6-1 Weight: 194 Position: Cornerback Class: Senior 40-Yard: 4.45 SCOUTING REPORT Strengths: Excellent size and speed for the position...Tough player who will fight through injuries...Great athleticism...Good ball skills and has become a a playmaker as a senior...Has a lot of experience and made an impact early on as a freshman. Weaknesses: Doesn't always play up to his physical tools...Isn't a great tackler...Not very stout against the run...Has a lot of work to do in terms of his technique...Needs to master the nuances of the position rather than relying on his physical gifts so much. Notes: Has just the type of size / speed ratio you are looking for in an NFL corner...A bit of an underachiver throughout his career but came on as a senior...You can bet some team will be more than willing to take a chance on a player with his physical tools and he could go a little higher than his play on the field would suggest. Second off CB Justin Miller from Clemson :
Justin Miller College: Clemson Height: 5-11 Weight: 200 Position: Cornerback Class: Junior 40-Yard: 4.40 SCOUTING REPORT Strengths: Playmaker in the secondary...Has great ball skills and a knack for making the big play...Very good speed and quickness...Fluid hips in coverage...Excellent athletic ability...Has a lot of experience despite being just a true junior...A threat to score every time he touches the ball...Physical and likes to hit...Also a dynamic return man. Weaknesses: Only average size...Had a down year as a sophomore...Gambles too much in an effort to make the big play...Inconsistent and will lose his concentration...Had some off the field problems...Can be too confident for his own good. Notes: Has just about everything the NFL is look for in a top cornerback...Not a finished product by any means, but a playmaker like this won't last long when he enters the draft. |

Thirdly CB Marlin Jackson from Michigan.
Marlin Jackson College: Michigan Height: 6-1 Weight: 196 Position: Cornerback Class: Senior 40-Yard: 4.40 SCOUTING REPORT Strengths: Great size...Excellent athlete...Very physical and aggressive...Good speed with the ability to close in a hurry...Really steps up and rises to the occasion when facing top wideouts. Weaknesses: Had a down junior season when he was moved to safety...Character might be a concern after some off the field troubles in 2003...Inconsistent at times and may lack top awareness. Notes: Bounced back nicely as a senior when he made the move back to his natural cornerback position...Should vie to be either the second or third cornerback off the board come April of '05. |

Smell Kiper writes that Rogers is a good open field tackler and is an asset in run support I liked his intensity when I watched him play.

I wouldn't mind trading down to take one of those CBs or even late into the 1st or early 2nd to take Corey Webster.

If we are going for the 4th best available CB with the 15th pick in the first round, then something is wrong. These lists are yet incomplete as most underclassmen have yet to declare.
What sucks is just about every draft site I used last year is now going by membership.

Corey Webster
College: LSU Height: 6-0 Weight: 201 Position: Cornerback Class: Senior 40-Yard: 4.50 SCOUTING REPORT Strengths: Excellent athletic ability...Good ball skills and hands...Great instincts...Good size and lanky frame...Just touching the tip of the iceberg in terms of his potential. Weaknesses: Doesn't have a lot of experience at corner...Still learning the nuances of the position...Has to refine his technique...Doesn't have elite speed. Notes: Former wide receiver...Didn't have the amazing senior season most were expecting but his physical tools and upside are hard to ignore.

It's not gonna matter who we pick in the draft anyway. Vermiel will say the kid is not ready, needs to take off the diapers and then about 3/4 of the way through the season the kid will crack the starting lineup and be the best cornerback since James Hasty

I don't watch collge ball. But from the descriptions, I would like Miller from Clemson, followed by Jackson from Michigan. Rogers being an underachiever does not seem compatible with a coaching staff that has a terrible track record on developing defensive backs. If Gunita is gone, I might reconsider, depending on who they got as DB coach.

IMO these draft profiles need to taken with a grain of salt. Each one is one mans opinion. And a underachiever? Didn't Rogers just win the Thorpe Award for the best CB in the Nation? How is that underachieving? What's the guy gotta do win it 4 years straight? I may be wrong but I bet that all the CBs after Rolle move up in the draft rankings between now and the draft. Seems like CBs and DEs always do. PhilFree

I think the premimum lies with guys that are freakish physical specimens (combo of size and speed) and have also shown some football ability. Workouts really help these guys. So the guys that tend to go in the first half of the first round are: CB with good speed and size, any DL that shows potential to be a monster, massive OT with good footwork, and WR with blazinig speed and decent size. Also QB for obvious reasons.
You may get a few RB, S, LB, TE, and interior lOL guys taken early, but these will be great football players, guys who have the potential to be the best coming out of college at their position in a multiyear time period. It is interesting that RB is not more of a premium position, given the importance of their role in the offense. But clearly you can get a top caliber back later in the draft. |

I just joined a premium draft site and in the profile they had they said Rogers ahd only allowed 18 receptions all season. Because it's a premium site I cant copy and past it. They had Miller ranked as the #1 CB and Rogers #2. I'm not saying these guys are right but it's just an example of different perceptions put forth in the player profiles. The main thing is that if we choose to target CB in the 1st round of the draft we should be able to get a good one.
