Any Planet members have London experience?

I am planning on studying abroad in London at some point next year for a semester. Anyone visited or been? What was it like for you?

Having said that, I have had some great times in London, the pubs and club scene is top notch.
The Marquee Club is a great joint, anyone who is anyone started at the Marquee Club. The best bet is to pick up one or more of the entertainment papers and see what is happening.

The best way to get around London is to take the tubes, take your time to learn the system and you can get anywhere reasonably inexpensively.

As you are going to be there for a while, do the tourist stuff first to get it out of the way; i.e. ride the double Decker tour bus around London, go see the Mouse Trap, the London Zoo that kind of thing.

Then start looking for the places that the locals go to, and most importantly get the hell out of London, if you are there over the new years, get your butt up to Scotland, they throw the best new years bash in the known universe.

Oh and be polite, don't harp on how we do things bigger and better in the States, remember what your mom taught you, if you can't say something nice keep your mouth shut.

What you reccomend city\town wise outside of London?

If you go out there, you have to take a day off and go up North to my homeland of Scotland. It's beautiful, and the people are very hospitable.

Eat some fish and chips. And take a dip in the North Sea (I fell in once. It's colder than a witches tit. But how many people can say they have been in the North Sea? )

I really need to go back one of these days.

When I was in that area, I had every intention of going over there, but was having WAY to much fun in Amsterdam.

If you don't like touristy type stuff, I'd suggest just taking the train into the countryside on a few weekends. Find a small town with interesting local flavor and a decent pub. Find some place to stay around there and hang out. Some of my best times in England were in the countryside.

Lots of great places and things to do.

Edinburgh is great during New Years and in the Spring, they have a cultural thing, with plays, art and music.

The New Years in Scotland is haugmanoy (sp?), you start in the pub, then take a bottle (single malted) down to High Street, at midnight you have a drink with all the guys you meet and kiss all the gals.

Then they pretty much have open parties all through the city, where you continue to drink and eat until basically you wake up the next day with a very big head and the notion that you had one hell of a good time.

The Lake District is nice, Bath is really great for a taste of old world charm. The Midlands have some nice places like Oxford and Strafford. Wales and Ireland are easy to get to and have some great things; you can also take the train through the Chunnel or hover craft over to France.

I don’t know how long you will be there or what your schedule will be like, but the best thing is to try and get a taste of all that the country has to offer and it is a bunch.

Two big negatives, right now the exchange rate sucks, and the winters are brutal, not that they have a lot of snow or anything, but it is dark, gray, cold and damp. Really starts to depress you after a while, this I found was easily cured by going to the Pub and downing a few pints of Bitter.

One note about Bitter, you will either love it or hate it. Just drink the local brand when possible, here is a good link to Beer festivals and info on what’s good to drink and what’s not. http://www.camra.org.uk/SHWebClass.A...howCat&CatID=1

Don't go anywhere by yourself,,or a least try not to. The food is pretty good actually,,although they don't have alot that you are probably used to here. If you act like you don't belong you will get taken advantage of fast. You have got to try and visit as many castles as you can, they are awesome. They will also offer you hot tea anywhere you go. If you are going to shop do not buy it the first time,,go next door and you will be suprised at the price difference.Because you are american they are gonna think you have money even if you don't. You are in for a great time,,,,,hope it is great for you.

ps,,,,the mcdonalds will be a shock for you,,,,,
