Schoolboys Arrested for Violent Drawings
Wednesday, January 26, 2005

OCALA, Fla. — Two boys, ages 9 and 10, were charged with felonies and taken away from school in handcuffs, accused of making violent drawings of stick figures.

The boys were arrested Monday on charges of making a written threat to kill or harm another person, a second-degree felony.

The special education students (search) used pencil and red crayon to draw primitive stick figure scenes on scrap paper that showed a 10-year-old classmate being stabbed and hung, police said.

"The officer found they were drawing these pictures for the sole purpose of intimidating and scaring the victim," said Ocala Police Sgt. Russ Kern.

The boy depicted in the drawings told his teacher, who took the sketches and contacted the school dean, Marty Clifford. Clifford called police, who arrested the boys after consulting with the State Attorney's Office.

They were also suspended from school.

One drawing showed the two boys standing on either side of the other boy and "holding knives pointed through" his body, according to a police report. The figures were identified by written names or initials.

Another drawing showed a stick figure hanging, tears falling from his eyes, with two other stick figures standing below him. Other pieces of scrap paper listed misspelled profanities and the initials of the boy who was allegedly threatened.

Parents of both of the arrested boys said they thought the boys should be punished by the school and families, not the legal system.

Like I said, if it had been ignored, there may have been eventual death. The chances of it going that far? Pretty slim, but I wouldn't want to be the one who took that chance and lost. The school could have faced a huge law suit, and the someone could have lost their child.

He could have died riding his bike too. With life comes the chance of death. People act like we they are freaking immortal or something. Humans still are humans, especially kids. This should been handled in the school. Bringing the law in is a joke. I would rather lose an occasional kid in this country that pussify the entire male population when they are in school. We really need to privatize.

You're missing the point. Just by the kids even appearing at school that day there's a chance they could do another child harm. Albeit a slim chance, but a chance nonetheless. By your line of reasoning, because the chance exists at all, no matter how small, all children should be kept in their homes at all times... completely isolated from other children who could potentially do them harm.

Some people would put their kid in a rubber room if they could.

I teach my godson to defend himself. If he was 9 or 10 and he told me this happened I would think I would call the school and tell them to knock it off. If it kept happening I would talk to their parents. If I was actually really scared for his health I would pull him and enroll him in another school. Under no circumstances would I want them charged with a felony for drawing a freakin picture, that's ridiculous.

Had they taken that chance and lost, they face a big time lawsuit and somebody loses a child. When threats of that nature are made, all percentages are out the window.

Wow, when I was growing up I used to draw war scenes all the time. Bloody shit, too. I also played with toy guns. I have never hurt a fellow human being since the 5th grade. This is bullshit, and coach_L, I just think you are wrong. No way does drawing violence, watching movies/playing video games translate into actually killing. Me and EVERYBODY I know are all examples of that.

I know there's no convincing you big_daddy. I agree with you that he should be taught to defend himself, but I hope he's never in this situation. A simple phone call might be too late and a lot of people would live with a lot of second guessing.

So if talking to the kids parents didn't work, you would opt to incur the cost of removing your child from the school to enroll him somewhere else, remove him from his friends,etc., rather than have the little miscreants arrested?

Metro, I'm not trying to link this to video games or movies. I watched them, and I drew stuff like that too. But I didn't draw it of a student in my class, and of me doing it to them.

I'm sorry if that comment I made about the video games etc, suggested the link to columbine or something. But you do have to consider a student's past when it comes to something this serious.

I see. Well even if he did draw the student, it still doesn't warrant arresting. Talking to his parents and the kid would proably help. Even bringing in the police officers to his house just to scare him and explain the sitaution would help. But arresting? I mean COME ON, people.

Below is a class of these deranged individuals, being taught how to draw in a constructive way. There is a 60 percent chance of them not returning to their life of crime with this successful rehab program located in nantucket, Tenn.
