Chiefs’ Green has procedure to fix circulation problem

Chiefs quarterback Trent Green had an outpatient procedure to fix a circulation problem and is expected to be back in practice Monday, coach Dick Vermeil said.

Green was absent again from Wednesday’s practice, four days after he took an early seat in Saturday night’s preseason loss to Seattle. After Wednesday’s workout, Vermeil called it a “minor problem” and said he expected the Pro Bowler to play in the Sept. 11 season opener against the Jets.

“Nobody’s given me reason to (worry),” Vermeil said. “Everything has been positive. So I think he’ll be ready to go to work.”

Green was pulled after the second series Saturday night and was seen on the sideline talking to doctors. He had been bothered by numbness in his lower left leg and foot. When he missed Tuesday’s practice, panic hit the plains. Green’s backup, Todd Collins, has a fractured hand, and No. 3 quarterback Damon Huard has been out with a concussion.

Vermeil said journeyman quarterback Jonathan Quinn, who was sitting at home in Overland Park, Kan., just over a week ago, will get the start Friday at St. Louis.

Sounds like he may have had a fasciotomy.....relieves the muscle compartment pressure, allowing improved blood flow and nerve transmission....sure would like to know the exact name of the procedure.

These can often be done via small incisions....possibly would require a very short rest postop.

Do you think it's a reoccurring problem, or is it a do once and forget for a long time type of deal?

Aftercare depends on the reason for the fasciotomy. People who have endoscopic plantar fasciotomy can walk without pain almost immediately, return to wearing their regular shoes within three to five days, and return to normal activities within three weeks. Most will need to wear arch supports in their shoes.

Risks

In endoscopic plantar fasciotomy, the greatest risk is that the arch will drop slightly as a result of this surgery, causing other foot problems. Risks involved with other types of fasciotomy are those associated with the administration of anesthesia and the development of blood clots.

Normal results

Fasciotomy in the limbs reduces pressure, thus reducing tissue death. Endoscopic plantar fasciotomy has a success rate of 90-95%.

Trent would not have had a plantar fasciotomy, but a lateral fasciotomy of the lateral leg......same basic technique, but different tissue and location
