1: Last time he faced this situation he made the decision and announcement two weeks before the end of the season that he would come back, and he said the reason for it was to get that talk off the table and allow for the players to concentrate on other things. Nothing even remotely like that this time around. 2: Last time he faced this situation Carl came out and talked about how DV could be the head coach here as long as he wanted. Nothing like that coming out of Carl's mouth now. |

Yeah, I think if all the trouble we had during training camp and early in the year wasn't enough, the Dallas and Giants losses finished him off. It's too bad. I think we're a good football team, and DV is still a pretty good coach. Everybody says we're soft or whatever but we've got a great shot at going 4-2 in this final stretch against 6 playoff caliber teams... with one loss in the Dallas game we could've won, followed by a Giants game on the road, on a short week where we just wore down, and in the process we've physically beat up the Pats, Broncos, and Chargers, which is pretty impressive, those are some physically tough teams. There were quite a few people saying we were about to go 0-6 or 2-4 or some garbage like that when we started that stretch. We've hung pretty damn tough. A lot tougher than Marty the Zeus of regular season coaching or Bill the living legend Parcells teams' did.
This has been a rough season... all the things with Trent alone, the stint in his leg, his career put in question, his dad passing away, then he had a kid. Controversy with LJ. Controversy with Priest, then a possible career ending spinal injury. Kennison's problems with his wife's health. Roaf's health. Gonzo's foot problem. Shields' contemplating retirement. Warfield's suspension. Welbourn's suspension. Sims' injury. Tynes in a barfight. Siavii and Wesley's legal issues. A coach got maced before a game. Legal problems. Having a game moved on hardly any notice due to a hurricane. Being the only team in the NFL to have 4 sets of back-to-back road games, which is nearly impossible to do better than split. Playing in a tough conference, where we could become the 4th team to win 10 games and not make the playoffs in the 12 team format. Nobody talks about none of this crap though, it's woe is the Chargers or Patriots or Jets or somebody else... but we've had a pretty rough season. This season hasn't been a success, but I think we probably deserve to be in a far worse position than where we are, going into the last week with at least a shot at a 10 win season and the playoffs. To me this team is a lot like Rocky in the 15th round of the first movie, we've had the living hell beat out of us and we look like crap, the cards aren't in our favor at all, but it's the 15th round and we're still standing up, somehow, I don't know how. And yeah, Carl's not going to bring him back anyway, I think his comments yesterday pretty much sealed that. Because Carl has done such a magnificent job, but I'll avoid ranting for 20 minutes on that and just stop there. Last edited by tk13; 12-29-2005 at 05:14 AM.. |

I know I'm in a minority here but I hope to hell he doesn't retire. They have done a good job of filling the holes that plagued them last year and played pretty damn well considering the schedule they played. This is a hall of fame coach that we're talking about, that just needs some help on the D line and a first class wide reciever, and a new defensive backs coach. That's little enough to ask. But luckily for the DV fans he doesn't read this crap or the crap the media puts out so that won't help make up his mind.

Frankly, I will laugh my head off if he does stay. The national and local media have all but cleared out his office.

Thats like saying "I stuck with my first wife while she was banging my brother and then stuck with my second wife while she was banging my first wife & my brother all because nobody is going to call me a quitter". I don't know how anyone could be so emotionally invested in a football team yet accept losing and simply attribute it to "being a fan". But then again, my last name is Johnson. |

Personally, I wouldn't be all that upset if DV came back (not that I think he will). I believe this team, with no changes in personnel, would make the playoffs next year. If for no other reason, because our schedule should be much easier.

I think the crux of the matter is how close DV thinks this team is. And for a rational, impartial person, the assessment may well be "they are talented enough right now to be the best, but the coaching is not providing the sufficient preparation, inspiration and will to get them to maximum output." But I think DV will see the talent and convince himself; 1) he can get them to maximum output, and more importantly, 2) he wouldn't be able to live with himself if someone else came in and got them to maximum output.

Everything Carl is saying is in stark contrast to 2003. DV isn't coming back, and I don't think he's got any control over it. |
