Mark M (re #7),
"The only reason the Chiefs stuck with him is that Carl can't admit a mistake (not saying EG was one, but you gotta wonder)." There may have been times when Carl wished he didn't sign Grbac to such a hefty contract. Maybe he would have let him go by now if he wouldn't have had to take such a significant cap-hit. But, I don't think he's holding on to him because he is unable to admit a mistake. Admitting such a mistake to the media would be a cardinal error............."well guys, I wish I hadn't signed that loser to that contract, now we're stuck with him for the next ? years.....sorry Kansas City". The team would certainly have gone down the tubes if he had admitted that. Anyway, IMO it's really beginning to look like he didn't make a mistake. I agree that a $10m bonus is way above what he (or just about any QB) deserves, but that will be taken care of. Grbac has only had a few bad games since the beginning of last season. Now's the time to stick with him, and keep him here with a reasonable contract extension, and hopefully bring in a good QB from the draft as a back-up. I figured if I debated a point with you, it might help you out of lurker-dom
|

Regarding the Carl made a mistake thing, remember Carl had his chance to dump him a few years ago, but instead they worked ot a contract extension for him, which instituted this bonus we are talking about now. Carl knew what he was getting into. Steiner I believe said that the bonus was a result of bringing the average of the contract up and they expected to rework things when it got to that point.
Clint, as far as the "pc" thing to say, that is true, but he isn't saying stuff like a lot of guys do say nowadays like "I like KC but I'd like to test the free agent waters." Again, if the Chiefs want him, he is under contract and both sides have every incentive to try and get an extention or a new deal done between them, especially since releasing him will save them the 10 million bonus but will still count a few million towards the cap because of his signing bonus and length of contract and the inability to wait until June 1 to release him. Otherwise if the Chiefs do not feel that strongly about it then they can take the hit in exchange for the $10 mil and go a different direction... |

Duh... Elvis got booed 'cause he's the quarterback and the offense sucked... That's why he gets paid the big bucks... Regardless of the coaching and play calling, which sucked too, Elvis is the general on the field. Hence, the general will be booed or cheered depending on his performance...
Remember, even the lions got booed when they didn't eat the Christians fast enough...
|

Not that the points being made here aren't valid, but the thread was started on an article written in the ST. LOUIS paper.
Anyway, don't forget KC was the first city to give EG a chance, regardless of the booing. Remember the mayor in San Fran called him something like the worst quarterback ever. Boos probably mean nothing to him. |

See the "political correctness" thread.
What the he*l ever happened to "What doesn't kill me makes me stronger"? Bradshaw was almost booed out of Pittsburgh and labeled a bust. The start of his NFL career was almost Leaf-esque. Now he's in the Hall of Fame. EG will never be in the HOF, but booing is no excuse for failure unless you're a total pus*y. Jesus Clint, all I am saying is the guy makes freakin mistakes. Give him a break. It is gonna happen. And I promise you... it is NOT making him any stronger by breaking his focus and concentration by trying to bust his ego. I am willing to put down money that he performs better when he is supported. Direct all of that negative energy towards the other team man. I don't need this from a fellow fan.

I find it hard to believe that he is the best we've had in 27 years.
I'm on Clint's side. [This message has been edited by 47mack (edited 09-29-2000).] |

If Elvis stays with the Chiefs, and believe he will, and he continues to play the way he has played thus far this season, and continues to improve, by the end of his career, he will become the second best QB in KC history. As it stands now, Bill Kenney is #2 on that list.

Just remember, he is the one who has already said he doesn't give a damn about the boos, so I think we are beyond the ego busting. I'm sure he'd rather get the crowd behind him but he knows how it is, and his most important concern right now seems to be to have his teammates have his back. I think Tongue's recent statements should fire him up even more, and led to his "Its time for me to step up and take it to Seattle" comments...
