Sounds like Rod Smith is done.

Stay down bitch!

http://www.gazette.com/sports/smith_...ning_camp.html

ENGLEWOOD – Denver Broncos wide receiver Rod Smith didn’t participate in any of the team’s offseason minicamp practices and said he doesn’t know whether his injured hip will allow him to be ready for the start of training camp.

The Broncos finished their final minicamp today. Training camp is set to begin July 29. Smith, who had arthroscopic hip surgery shortly after last season, said he has been extra cautious with his recovery. He said he’ll continue to play it safe because he doesn’t want to set himself back, even if that means missing some of training camp.

“I hope to, but if I don’t, I don’t think it’s the end of the world,” Smith said about being ready for the start of training camp. “Football season starts in September, and that’s what I’m looking forward to.”

Smith said he felt some inflammation in the hip this week. He stood with the rest of the receivers during Tuesday’s practice wearing a gray sweat suit.

Smith, 37, said he hasn’t considered retiring.

“If I think that, then I’ll quit,” Smith said.

Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said there was no timetable on Smith’s return, but he would continue to work out the next three weeks, and the team would re-evaluate his status before training camp.

“We don’t want to push him too hard and set him back,” Shanahan said.

Rod definitely has the credentials. It made me chuckle when Pete Prisco did his HOF piece recently (CBS) and he put Keenan McCardell as an "in" for Canton, but not Rod Smith.

Woah!! Rod is bringing some hostility to the planet.

My thoughts on Rod Smith are that even though he played for the Broncos and destroyed my secondary for what seemed like 45 consecutive seasons, I still have respect for the guy. He did an aweful lot with very little to work with. Additionally, there was a long time where he was the only receiver Denver had that could walk and chew gum at the same time. Moreover he seems like a pretty class act (Disclaimer: I haven't been able to watch him much, but from what I've seen he is respectable). Overall, he is one of the most underrated receivers I have been exposed to.

This season is an entirely different story. I do not view Rod Smith as the threat he normally is. Absolutely not. They have some talent at WR, and Rod Smith is just old. It happens, even to great players (Favre withstanding. He might be the son of Zues), and it may just happen that he won't score a touchdown, but I don't think that will deflect from the great career he has had.

Does anyone have his career stat line? I haven't heard much about Rod Smith and the HoF, but it may make an interesting offseason discussion.

Rod Smith - undrafted rooked free agent in 1995

ALL TIME Rankings for NFL Receivers:

#11 in Receptions - 849
#17 in Receiving Yards - 11,389
#30 (tied) in Receiving TDs - 68
#42 in Yards from Scrimmage

Playoff #'s - 49 receptions for 860 yards and 6 TDs in 12 games. Rod had 5 receptions of 152 yards and 1 TD in the SB vs ATL and had it not been for Elway having a huge game, Rod could have been SB MVP (many thanks to Eugene Robinson).

Rod Smith has the most receptions and yards (not sure about TDs) for any UDFA WR in NFL History.

3 time pro bowler
2 SB Titles
8 seasons (out of 12) with over 1,000 yds receiving
9 straight seasons as the leading receiver on the team
9 straight seasons with 70+ receptions
2 seasons with 100+ receptions

Finished a season within the top ten overall in receptions and receiving yards - 4 times. And, top 10 in TDs twice.

Is he Jerry Rice or Tim Brown? No. But, his credentials speak well of his accomplishments, longevity and his place in Canton. Debate it if you like, it's what we do... but, I think he's a worthy candidate for Canton.

Thanks Mania. I don't really know what it takes to get into Canton, besides playing for Dallas or New York. I know they are blockading DT. Those are pretty good stats, I would hate to have him kept out because he is not "talked about" by the stupid media people that let players in.

From the article posted, I don't see how you can come to the conclusion he is done. I hope he is, but I don't see the article stating anything saying it.
It is not that uncommon for vets of his caliber, to not be ready for camp for a variety of reasons.

I would, grudgingly, support his nomination. As has been pointed out he's done more from less auspicious beginnings than most anyone. He's also been a "work hard" guy rather than someone who got those numbers with natural talent, that counts for a lot with me even if he's a dirty Donk.

That's the deal, nobody really knows. Guys like Art Monk may never get in while others like Jim Kelly are first ballot HOF'ers. Irvin took a few years to get in, but he's going in this year.

Irvin was a very good player and on a very good Cowboys' team, but stat wise... he's no better than Rod Smith in the same number of seasons - 12.

Michael Irvin - 750 / 11904 / 65
Rod Smith - 849 / 11,389 / 68

Irvin has about 600 more yards, 2 more pro bowls and 1 more SB title.
Rod has 1 more 1,000 yard season and 1 more 100+ catch season.

Irvin only ranks higher in Rec Yds (1 of 4 categories) on the all-time top 50.

Irvin was a R1 pick and Smith an UDFA.

If Irvin is in, Rod is in.

Who knows what will happen, but he is at the end of a great career sadly. This could be his final year, he's 37... and if it is, he will be greatly missed.

http://www.denverbroncos.com/page.ph...4&storyID=6920

excerpts -

"Honestly, I have no idea. The thing is, I'm doing everything they've asked me to do, and I'm trying to do whatever I can to get better. That's all I can do. I can't rush what's happening, and I'm not going to try."
--
Meanwhile, Smith works five days a week at team headquarters, perpetuating his decade-plus streak of perfect attendance for voluntary offseason duties. He called himself "Aquaman" back in May and the pool remains a vital part of his workout, as he has yet to run on dry land.

"I'm not running right now," he said. "I can run in the pool and things like that because (the water) takes a little bit of gravity out of play. The thing is, 'Why try to do it now?' when you set yourself back, meaning that it's camp and the season and you're still trying to get better. That's unacceptable."
---

Sounds like he's treating it right, so only time will tell.

Rod Smith is the consumate professional. I don't believe he will make it to Canton, but he really has had a great career. That said, I hope plays this year because he has definitely lost a step.
