Despite loss, Chiefs still first in the AFC Worst

At 4-4 with 2 home losses, all is not lost for the Kansas City Chiefs. An imploding division leaves the Chiefs still on top with SD’s loss at Minnesota and Denver’s humiliation at the hands of the red hot Detroit Lions.

Changes are coming:

Joe Buck plugged away at the Croyle-is-warming-up-on-the-sidelines angle; he got that idea from somewhere.

Larry Johnson’s ankle roll looked like a season ender. Herm said we will see plenty of Kolby Smith along with Priest Holmes. I smell a RBbC…

The better team won:

Favre’s 360 yards passing on the road was a championship performance against a stout defense;

Easy to see why the Pack cut Rayner in favor of Crosby;

Even with plenty of yellow hankies assisting the KC offense’s anemic efforts, GB’s defense took away the run and shut down KC’s (admitted second string) WRs.

The good:

Alphonso Boone is a beast inside who creates all kind of problems for interior blockers;

Dustin Colquitt. ‘Nuff said.

The bad:

3 of 11 on third downs, Huard was sacked 5 times for -40 yards.

Chief’s Cover 2 let WRs get behind them too much against a QB who made them pay for it.

The ugly:

Kansas City averaged just 4 yards-per-play. That is miserable.

KC is dead last in play efficiency: more 3-and-outs than any team in the NFL.

Bold prediction:

Now that Herm is without LJ, he will have to be more creative on offense (which means actually trying to get 1st downs and score). He can no longer hide behind the mirage of “we’re a power running team”. Anticipated result: the Chiefs O will actually improve.

It would be meaningful to still be in first if there was hope the offense would get better because we had been investing in the future by playing a young QB.

There were boos today. I could have sworn they even booed when LJ was assisted off the field. Maybe they were booing the hit?

I almost wasted $300 on tix for this game. So glad I didn't. I think I'll go to the Tennessee game on the 16th.

Because 9-7 teams have often caught fire in DEC and advanced as far as their Conference title games. Because winning the AFCW is still an attainable goal.

True, but ya hafta hope for the best no matter what. Its either us or the Norvicated Chargers. I like us. Yeah, we'll get flattened in the first round again, but at least we'll have made the post season in back to back years for the first time since...

Who cares if 8-8 wins the division and we lose in the first round every year? How is going 8-8 and playing Huard the whole year going to help us get better? The rest of the division being terrible is the worst thing that could happen to this team.

Now we're going to push to win the West and it's going to end up hurting us in the end.

LJ hasn't taken any pressure off our passing game this year. I remember when Grbac threw for 4,169 yds, 28 TDs and continued to use play action when we had no credible threat to run the ball.

At least Cunningham was able to say, "OK, look boys, we were built for Maulball but we lost our RB. Let's use the people we have to do what we have to do." KC finished 8th in NFL in total offense in 2000 and 5th in passing running 2 TE/1 RB sets. I wish Herm would make similar adjustments.
