Vick gets 23-month sentence on dogfighting charges
ESPN.com news services

Updated: December 10, 2007, 10:49 AM ET

RICHMOND, Va. -- Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison Monday for his role in a dogfighting conspiracy.

Federal sentencing guidelines suggested a year to 18 months.

The suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback also received three years' probation at his sentencing before U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson.

With nearly a month already served, going by Hudson's sentencing, Vick would be scheduled for release in October 2009.

I still doubt he ever steps onto the field in the NFL again.

The guy was a marginal QB at best already, and now you're going to add 2-3 years of age and 2-3 years out of football to that. There's no question he's going to regress and it would probably be a year before he were back to the way he was before.

Considering the distraction, and the PR nighmare, I don't think there are a lot of GMs out there who are going to go to their owners and say "Hey, this guy is what our franchise needs." You can't sell it to coaches or fans or team management. Not to mention the protectors showing up every week and everything else.

He's thrown his last interception, IMO.

Good for him.

I know that the animal abuse is bad, but really what people are forgetting is that he was also running a INTERSTATE GAMBLING RING!

He is better suited to play in the CFL, I mean come on, if Casey Printers (a very poor mans Vick) can be the MVP, can you imagine what Vick will be able to do up there? Plus, they will pay him pretty good, they paid Ricky Williams pretty good for being a fullback.

Vick=2009 CFL MVP!!!

The CFL is to the NFL as a league, as the Raiders are to the rest of the NFL as a team.

I agree with Cochise I don't think he plays another down in the NFL.

Quote:
ESPN reports that Judge Henry Hudson has sentenced Falcons quarterback Mike Vick to 23 months in jail.

The sentence is five months longer than the 12-18 months that prosecutors recommended, and that the federal sentencing guidelines seemed to indicate.

Vick also received three years of probation, which means that he'll need to stay out of trouble for 36 months after his sentence ends. If not, he'll go back to jail.

Under federal law, he'll be required to serve 85 percent of the term, and if he behaves while in jail he'll be eligible for an early release.

That's 19.55 months, which means that Vick won't get out of jail until early June of 2009, at the earliest.

The question then becomes whether the NFL imposes a finite suspension on him after he gets out of jail. A one-year suspension would make him eligible to return to the NFL in 2010. At that time, he'll be 30 -- and nearly four years removed from playing football at the professional level.

Remember, Vick's is also facing state charges. Very few judges let individuals serve federal and state sentences at the state time. Therefore, assuming VA finds him guilty, as soon as he has completed his federal time, he will be transferred to state prison to serve his state sentence.

As far as playing football, the Fed sentence takes care of the 2008 & (part of) 2009 seasons, the state sentence will take care of the rest of 2009 & 2010. A league suspension takes care of 2011.

How's your fantasy team in 2012 looking? Need a starting QB?

Wouldn't those would have to be seperate charges, though? The state and the feds can't both charge him for the same crime, the way I understand things.
