Mario Manningham Scores 6 on Wonderlic.

Credit to Blueballs who had cited this in another post, thought some might not see it in there so here it is.

Typical Michigan Bum.

MARIO CHECKS INTO THE MOTEL 6
Posted by Mike Florio on April 25, 2008, 10:23 a.m.
Somehow, we missed this one.

But it’s better never than late. Or something.

A reader pointed out to us today a list of Wonderlic scores showing Michigan receiver Mario Manningham generating a Vince Young-style six on the test.

A six. Out of 50.

We checked with a league source who has access to the numbers and, lo and behold, Manningham indeed got a six.

For the former Michigan receiver, it’s another glob of lard that will grease his slide to the second day of the draft. Other knocks on Manningham include a sssslow time in the 40 and a failure to admit during interviews at the Scouting Combine the fact that he failed at least one marijuana test in college.

Manningham thereafter wrote a letter to all teams apologizing for his prevarication (thanks, Tiki). But maybe Manningham merely should have explained the falsehood by pointing out, “What did you guys expect? I got a six on the Wonderlic.”

I don't think he hired an agent until after the combine so it is likely he had no clue what the test was, nor was he ever told how to take the test.

Here are the published scores for the Wonderlic test by the upcoming notable draft participants. Does it make you rethink who you’d want to draft at #9? Some interesting facts about the Wonderlic:

This assessment roughly corresponds to examples from Paul Zimmerman’s The New Thinking Man’s Guide to Pro Football. According to Zimmerman, examples of average scores for each position are:

Offensive tackle - 26
Center - 25
Quarterback - 24
Guard - 23
Tight end - 22
Safety - 19
Linebacker - 19
Cornerback - 18
Wide receiver - 17
Fullback - 17
Halfback - 16
Pat McInally, a graduate of Harvard University, is the only football player to record a confirmed perfect score of 50.

Ryan Fitzpatrick (a Cincinnati Bengal backup QB), a Harvard graduate like McInally, had also been rumored to have scored a perfect score of 50, in only nine minutes. However, he later claimed to have left at least one of the 50 answer spaces blank , leading the media to question his perfect score. The Wall Street Journal later reported that Fitzpatrick’s actual score was 38 (still considered excellent), but that Fitzpatrick’s claim of completing the Wonderlic in only nine minutes was accurate.

While an average football player usually scores around 20 points, Wonderlic, Inc. claims a score of at least 10 points suggests a person is literate. Furthermore, when the test was given to miscellaneous people of various professions, it was observed that the average participant scored a 24. Examples of scores from everyday professions included:

Chemist - 31
Programmer - 29
Journalist - 26
Sales - 24
Bank teller - 22
Clerical worker - 21
Security guard - 17
Warehouse - 15

I see Clady only got a 13. Not exactly the score you want in a offensive lineman.

I think a lot of players just don't take it seriously or are not aware if that if they dont immediately know the answer to move on. Their agents should couch them on this though. I would say you can get a 6 just by guessing on all 50 pretty easy. Some of the questions are very easy.

Couch?? And you got a 48?? Test must be really easy then..
