Girls Basketball Team Wins 100-0

Bad sportsmanship or laying the wood down??

Girls Basketball Team Wins 100-0, Seeks Forfeit
Friday, January 23, 2009

DALLAS — A Texas high school girls basketball team on the winning end of a 100-0 game has a case of blowout remorse.

Now officials from the winning school say they are trying to do the right thing by seeking a forfeit and apologizing for the margin of victory.

In a statement Thursday on The Covenant School's Web site, the head of school said, "It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened." He went on to say that Covenant has made "a formal request to forfeit the game recognizing that a victory without honor is a great loss."

Last week Covenant, a private Christian school in Dallas, defeated Dallas Academy 100-0. Covenant was up 59-0 at halftime.

A parent who attended the game told The Associated Press that Covenant continued to make 3-pointers — even in the fourth quarter. She praised the Covenant players but said spectators and an assistant coach were cheering wildly as their team edged closer to 100 points.

"I think the bad judgment was in the full-court press and the 3-point shots," said Renee Peloza, whose daughter plays for Dallas Academy. "At some point, they should have backed off."
Dallas Academy coach Jeremy Civello told The Dallas Morning News that the game turned into a "layup drill," with the opposing team's guards waiting to steal the ball and drive to the basket. Covenant scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and "finally eased up when they got to 100 with about four minutes left," he said.

Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and about 20 girls in its high school. It is winless over the last four seasons. The academy boasts of its small class sizes and specializes in teaching students struggling with "learning differences," such as short attention spans or dyslexia.

There is no mercy rule in girls basketball that shortens the game or permits the clock to continue running when scores become lopsided. There is, however, "a golden rule" that should have applied in this contest, said Edd Burleson, the director of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. Both schools are members of this association, which oversees private school athletics in Texas.

"On a personal note, I told the coach of the losing team how much I admire their girls for continuing to compete against all odds," Burleson said. "They showed much more character than the coach that allowed that score to get out of hand. It's up to the coach to control the outcome."

Covenant coach Micah Grimes and head of school Kyle Queal did not immediately respond to messages left by The Associated Press on Thursday.

In the statement on the Covenant Web site, Queal said the game "does not reflect a Christ-like and honorable approach to competition. We humbly apologize for our actions and seek the forgiveness of Dallas Academy, TAPPS and our community."

Queal said school officials met with Dallas Academy officials to apologize and praised "each member of the Dallas Academy Varsity Girls Basketball team for their strength, composure and fortitude in a game in which they clearly emerged the winner." Civello said he appreciated the gesture and has accepted the apology "with no ill feelings."

At a shootaround Thursday, several Dallas Academy players said they were frustrated during the game but felt it was a learning opportunity. They also said they are excited about some of the attention they are receiving from the loss, including an invitation from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban to see an NBA game from his suite.

"Even if you are losing, you might as well keep playing," said Shelby Hyatt, a freshman on the team. "Keep trying, and it's going to be OK."

Peloza said the coach and other parents praised the Dallas Academy girls afterward for limiting Covenant to 12 points in the fourth quarter. She added that neither her daughter nor her teammates seemed to dwell on the loss.

"Somewhere during that game they got caught up in the moment," Peloza said of the Covenant players, fans and coaches. "Our girls just moved on. That's the happy part of the story."

Way to put the hammer down on a group of girls who have problems bigger than winning basketball games.

Seems pretty obvious to me that Dallas Academy has no business even attempting to play competitive basketball. Drawing from a pool of 20 kids, all of whom have mental issues? That's just ****ing brilliant.

It's a fine, Christian example...

Sorry, but its stupid. The losing team learns nothing, the winning team learns less. Yeah, let's press and shoot 3's in the fourth quarter on a team that is filled with mentally challenged folks.

Just damned brilliant. If my girl played on the winning team, she wouldn't be playing today.

There is more to life than slamming people less capable than you.

On the one hand they should of not press too hard. The other hand the losing team don't want to think the winning team was taking it easy on them. This will only want to make the losing team try harder. I think they will be a better team for it.

P.s. I like womans basketball i have friends who playing for ku and ksu. They play hard and are exciting to watch.

Knowing that your team that hasn't won a game in 4 years isn't going to be competitive is one thing. Expecting some team with zero clue about sportsmanship to repeatedly stomp on your throat is something else.

They are kids trying to live a quasi-normal high school life with normal high school activities like sports. I can't fault them for that.

I don't feel sorry for the losing team. I feel sorry for the winning team. Those girls are now going to get a lesson about sportsmanship from the national media, when they should have been getting it from their coach. And I don't think the exposure is going to make them feel like the basketball demi-gods that they apparently thought they were on that particular night.

The coaching staff gets all the blame IMO. You can't blame the ladies for giving it their all and not letting up. That is what you are supposed to do.

That being said, the coach is well aware that the other team hasn't won a game in four years. Why press in the first place? He could have played a zone and won just as easily with a half court game.

Why throw down your full house when you can beat them with just a pair?

Oh look, the press found a convenient villain who we can lash out at with no consequence and who may actually pay a price for a stupid but overall harmless mistake which we know only exactly what the people reporting the story decide to tell us. And who is more deserving of our discerning compassion than the learning challenged who were beaten in basketball game.

Never mind that homeless person you passed on the way to work today who may have fought a war for your freedom. Or the families going homeless because greedy bankers found a way to make money off defaulted loans while our government bails them out with our tax money - or the millions of other real atrocities.

Break out the pitchforks and torches fellow townsfolk and get ready to storm the village, we have found our witch.

So the winning team continued its full court press and bombing 3 pointers for the entire game while playing with an insurmountable lead against a bunch of "learning differences" challenged students.

Great. My suggested punishment would be for the winning team to be forced to play their choice of a professional NBA team, the players of whom would be awarded prize money (donated to their favorite charity) based on the margin of victory.

Unfortunately, I suspect even under those circumstances the NBA players would actually not have the heart to do what these pathetic girls did. Yeesh.

They definitely need a mercy rule. Score enough points to start the running clock, put in the third-stringers, and get the game over with. I can't bash the losing team because they simply don't have enough talent.

The Covenant head coach is an absolute freaking douchebag...running a full court press and having his team bomb 3 point shots in the 2nd half then they were already up by 53 points and knew the other team had no chance.

Boy that's a lot of class there.

Can't really blame the players as they were just following instructions.

No point in Dallas Academy having a team either...seems like they're not gaining anything at all by having four winless seasons, etc.

Right, that's fine. Were they playing full court press and raining 3's at every opportunity?

Winning 100-0 isn't where the winners went wrong here. What went wrong was continuing to do everything possible to win by the greatest possible margin until they scored 100 points with 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter.
