2009 Oscars
Starting this on the main board since it's a once-a-year dealio...
Just returned home from the annual AMC marathon, and here's my thoughts, in no particular order: As was the case last year, the best picture I was was the last picture I saw. In '08 that was No Country for Old Men. This year it was Frost/Nixen. I thought this was a particularly weak year, none of these films struck me as 'great', and I think most if not all of the movies up for the award last year were better. My order would be: 1. Frost/Nixon, 2. The Reader, 3. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, 4. Milk, 5. Slumdog Millionaire. None of the films were bad, by any stretch, but I don't see myself going out of my way to see any of them again. I thought The Dark Knight was as good as any of them. I haven't seen The Wrestler, but my guess it I'll believe it was snubbed. Best actor from the films I saw was Frank Langella as Nixon. Penn was good as Milk, but Langella was on another plateau. Brad Pitt was also very good. I have no idea why Josh Brolin got a best supporting nod. James Franco was the supporting meat of that movie. No pun intended. Kate Winslet was the only Best Actress nominee I saw, and she was extremely good. That film surprised me: I'd heard people complain about its best picture nomination, but I thought it was very good. That's all I got for now. |
