you don't know your 'leet' speak history do you? 1337 was originally from old BBS hacker days(and even phone phreakers) used to also be spelled 31337 which was the original translation for elite as in elite hacker.

This is just an extension of the common code speak that used to happen back in the old days, now new medium and a few new phrases.
