Can Tank Tyler play nose tackle?

We could put Glen D at D-end. He's quick for his size.

If our experts think that Tank or Glen can't play nose then we will have to take BJ RAJI or teams will just run down our throats.

bunch of mumbo jumbo to follow:

Tank dropped 20lbs or so last offseason. So weight wise it might be better for him(to gain some back) but he did play much more snaps and that weight loss helped his endurance. He seemed kind of top heavy to me as a rook. Might have been that he played to high. Speaking of snaps, Dorsey played 70 some % of all snaps on D. That's a crapload for a rookie DT.

Edwards IIRC had a bum shoulder before signing with KC. He's the biggest DT but I don't think he plays up to what you would expect of a good NT.

I don't think we dive into a traditional 34. More of a hybrid blend depending who's on the field. And who else we aquire.

I try to look at it from 2 defenses, not including last years AZ team which we may look the most like, but the ravens of recent years and the '97 Falcon team in KC. We don't have the Nauhta (however you spell it). But what those teams had was DE/DT tweeners. Trevor Pryce for the ravens, Dan Williams, John Browning, Leslie O'Neal, all 3 Chiefs played more of a 3tech rushing role some of the time, Williams most of the time. I mention Pryce just for the size comparrasion. The closest we have to a guy like that is Boone. I don't see Hali fitting in very well. TJ jackson maybe as a backup DT. Derek Lokey i don't see fitting as an undersized DT.

Then i throw guys like McBride and Brian Johnston in their own categorie. Johnston you would think could grow into a good 5tech. But iirc, he had short arms and that would pose a problem will long armed bigger OT's. So it might be OLB or bust for him. Based on last season he doesn't look too good on his feet in a 2pt stance. Obviously he played DE not OLB but even special teams he seemed on the ground too much. McBride too me, is interesting to look at. Size wise, not the same player, but size wise he's the same as Adalius Thomas. Maybe he fits that DE/DT tweener role better than an OLB but it's just something to me with his size and the way he played special teams, picked up short kicks on KR's as a rook that he is athletic enough to take a look there. He hasn't shown the speed at DE, much to do with the mental side IMO. He's only 6'2 but he's lanky with long arms and strong. Could be a versital player with some new and hopefully better coaching.

Babin is a FA i don't see us resigning unless it's for the Vet min. He was drafted as a 34 OLB for the texans and in seattle and here last season he was a DE and seemed and said as much when he signed that that's where he is more compfortable. Wallace Gilberry is the same size as Turk I just don't see anything near the athletic ability.

Andy Studebaker has a shot at OLB. Might even as a ILB but that would be in more of a traditional 34 look. He was another small school sackster. He was being groomed as a LB with the eagles before we signed him off the taxi squad.

So if you would make the Raven comparrason only(not skillset or athleticsm) Vrabel is our LOLB like Jarret Johnson. Boone is our LE, Tank at NT, Dorsey at DT, Robertson as the rush end/ROLB by default. Probably Hali instead, won't matter, i'm sure we draft someone high there.

The key spots are the Ray Lewis at MLB and Bart Scott at RILB/WLB. If you put DJ at MLB we have to worry about stopping the run. Better idea would be to stack him behind a 3tech like dorsey and let him run free, unblocked. That doesn't make Demo Williams the default guy at MLB as he would have more problems than DJ. His role may only be that of a Nickel LB and special teams guy. So we got Beisel, Corey Mays, and Curtis Gatewood to fight it out there.

Needless to say it's much easier to look at the secondary and the trio of Flowers, Carr, Leggett, and decent backups in Colcough and Travis Daniels. Those top 3 are a sure brightspot for this team. Pendergast getting something out of Pollard, getting Morgan involved along with a serviceable McGraw and Page in a contract year and that unit looks good.

But we really need some play makers in the front seven.

Tank Needs to be around 320 or so to have a shot at NT. He could probably do it if he gained the weight.

I think Tank can handle the NT position in the 3-4. Hell, I remember there being a lot of talk about him being a better fit as one coming out of the draft.

I'd rather see if Tank can play that role than taking a huge risk at a player like BJ Raji.

Another example of a hybrid scheme was the George Seifert defenses in SF and Carolina. They had the Charles Haley type of player who was such a good pass rusher they didn't drop him in coverage much, but could have. Kevin Greene played on both teams after playing for the Steelers and played what they called the elephant or rush end spot.

I'm not sure if we have a true NFL starting DE at this point. Maybe a solid backup.
