New Yorker Article On Kyle Turley...Scary Stuff...

Some of this was covered in the Yahoo article a month or so ago but reading what this guy lives with is sad.

Too long to post inline so here's the link: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2...urrentPage=all

I thought it was an interesting article. The dogfighting comparison was a bit forced, but there were enough parallels that I didn't think it was completely superfluous. I think the dogfighting was intended to describe the industry and owners as much as the players, or maybe more.

It's scary to think about the possibility of this type of long-term brain damage if you're a former player at any level. For that matter, I think about a concussion I had in a car wreck many years ago when I read about stuff like this.

This article hits a little close to home. I had 3 pretty serious concussions in college and this scares the chit out of me. I got earholed recovering an onside kick and actually had bleeding at the base of my brain. I was somehow cleared to play the following week. I was young and bullet proof but now that I am at the ripe old age of 30........it does scare me.

The guys who play professional football made an informed decision to enter the sport and make that their career of choice and are highly compensated for it.

Ridiculous question on the end of your post there by the way. Because not playing in the NFL precludes me from having a dissenting opinion than that of the writer of the article, right?

If time spent in the NFL is a qualifier for having an opinion on the matter... Malcolm Gladwell surely does not qualify either.
in formed descision?

I feel differently

we all played the game (high schoolonly for me) for the love of the game

and 1/2 to 3/4 of that love was putting somebody down hard

my best friend in school
got concussed ona great hit inthe 1st quarter on a kick return
we wree middle line backers and he had no idea there was a game going on he fianlly just wondered ofgf the feild until the coaching stall caught him andf set his ass down

I can understand the connection between dogfichting and football

rules aren't gonna help
maybe better equipment

and the guys they are talking asbout aren't the high dollar ones
just an Oline man gets the hell beat out of him during a game
granted I gotta work 7 or 8 years to make what they do in one

iI dunno
just my 3 cents worth

I liked and was stunned by the article

Yup. Informed decision.

The article was written about former NFL players. Not former high school players.

So yes, the professional players in the NFL, even Collegiate level players, know damn well that they are playing a dangerous sport with possibly life altering opportunities for injury.

I understand where you are coming from though. We didn't play in high school for a paycheck or a scholarship. We played because we wanted to... and the girls.

Football was a way for me to get a college education without having a mountain of student loan debt. Sometimes I feel like I am 80 yrs old when I get up in the morning but I got that degree.
