Gus Johnson was forced to apologize for THIS?

Jump to the :30 mark for the comment in question:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...ouchdown-call/

Quote:
One week after taco talk got ESPN announcer Bob Griese suspended, another announcer is apologizing for a supposedly controversial remark.

CBS' Gus Johnson, well known for his, uh, emotional calls, called Chris Johnson's 59-yard touchdown against the Jaguars like so:

"First down and ten. Johnson . . . gets his shoulders square. Watch out! He's got getting away from the cops speed . . . touchdown!"

The call drew some criticism by some surprisingly sensitive souls in the blogosphere that wondered if a double standard was at play if Johnson didn't get in trouble. The broadcaster responded Tuesday.

"If there is a perception of racism in this analogy, it is not coming from me," Johnson said. "People of all races have run from the law. However, to those who are offended, I apologize."

Johnson's word choice may have been unfortunate -- although sorta funny -- but who is really offended by this? Delicate sports fans?

The argument seems to be that Johnson's words would have caused a bigger outrage if said by Jim Nantz, for instance. So what we're apparently looking for is more faux-outrage over silly comments to make things "fair." (Montoya, incidentally, later joked about Griese's comments.)

Gus Johnson chose his words wisely after the fact. Anyone perceiving race in his analogy is stretching for something pretty hard. It was a goofy comment made out of enthusiasm.

Anytime Chris Johnson and Gus Johnson get together, that should almost be expected.

Too bad Madden isn't Gus' partner...would love to see him analyze that comment on his prompter...

Second. Can you imagine if he'd called the Giants/Pats Superbowl? That Tyree catch would've had the greatest call in NFL history. Instead, Joe Buck barely took time away from reading the "Suggested Serving" table on his box of Toasted O's (I think he's too bland for brand name stuff) to comment on arguably the greatest play in the history of the Super Bowl...

are we really that surprised? I mean we get bent out of shape what LJ says, now its this and I don't even want to be around a TV when another person has to apologize for a comment made that hasn't been made 1,000,000 times already. We need another Favre story or this shit will flood since they don't have shit for news.

If the comment didn't offend Chris Johnson then Gus Johnson should tell the rest to kiss his ass. This country has become so sad.

The question would be whether or not people were offended by the call and whether or not he would have used the same adjective if it had been a white player. The NFL and the stations that broadcast it have far too much money at stake to be toeing race lines in a sport enjoyed by such a wide cross section of cultures in this country. Does Gus Johnson have the right to say it, absolutely. Does he need to apologize afterwards if it upsets certain viewers sensibilities? Well, if I'm his boss, hell yes he does. The NFL is not a controversial product, it's entrenched mainstream entertainment and has nothing to gain and all to lose from upsetting any segment of fans.
