The reason you didn't like the book is the reason that I loved it. It's a great commentary on the old axiom "perception is reality."

I thought Catcher in the Rye was okay. But a literay masterpiece? No way. My favorite literary masterpiece of this millenium is For Whom the Bell Tolls. They way that he unfold the charecters throught the book is outstanding.

I guess there is some literary value there... but as far as entertainment value (which is important) there is ZERO.

Really? Wow... every time he opened his mouth, I just wanted him to shut up. He is one of the very few types of people that I can't get along with at all and just try to avoid. I call them the 'poor me's'. Everything is always everyone elses fault... makes me want to puke.

"Catcher in the Rye" was great. I read it in high school based on a teacher's suggestion. Before that, I hated reading. I remember telling the teacher I liked it and he then handed me Kerouac's "On the Road" I then discovered a lifelong love for reading thanks to a high school teacher.

For the record, "Franny and Zooey" is just as good, if not better than "Cather in the Rye"

Lastly, someone mentioned he was a recluse. Salinger indeed was a recluse. As a matter of fact, some time in the '90's, his house burned down. His house was so secluded in this heavily forested area that the fire department couldn't reach it in time.

And this is why high school teachers hand their students this book. Very common experience for a certain type of kid (usually somewhat intellectual, disaffected youth who don't really dig on traditional school shit).

Loved Franny and Zooey, I've never read Catcher in the Rye, however.

Exactly. It's a good starting book. It should lead to much better things for a reader. You had a good teacher.
