Getting out of the Army today!!!

Today is my last day in Army greens! Thanks everyone for your supportive comments over the last year or so. Today it is over. I am happily out of the Army and on my way to South Dakota for a few months. In June I will be headed to Colorado and looking forward to meeting some of Chiefs Nation on gameday against the Donks.

See you soon!

Have another beer on me!

Maz

I remember that day. It sure was a weird feeling driving off my last army base after 6 years of active duty. Put that GI Bill to good use. I graduate this spring with a Bachelors in Secondary Ed. and it was all paid for by my military service.

Congratulations. I remember the joy of the day I got out.

I don't know if you're retiring or getting out after one hitch. If you're retiring, that's great, and disregard everything else I'm about to write.

I know there's a big difference between the Army of today and the Navy of 20 years ago, and there's no real comparison between the suck of being stuck on a carrier out at sea for months on end and the suck of being stuck in Afghanistan for months on end. However.... I enlisted on April 3, 1984 and got out April 2, 1990. On April 2, 2004, I will tell you that I spent a good part of the day thinking about how cool it would be to have a pension and free health care benefits for the rest of my life.

I'm not telling you I think you should stay in - I'm not even recommending it. But this is something you'll think about when you get older. It's rough out there.

This.

About a year after I got out of the Air Force.....I was wishing that I would've stayed in. The grass is always greener though...

And another thing - there's a noticeable difference between having part of your income taxed and having all of your income taxed. My first civilian job paid about the same as what I was making when I got out, but my take home pay got kicked in the balls because only about 2/3rds of my military pay had been taxable.

Take this into account, or you will have a "WHO'S FICA?" moment when you get your next paycheck, and it will suck.

Congrats. My last day was 13 Mar 1997 and when I woke up the 14th I felt about 300lbs lighter after that gorilla got of my back. I work for DOD Ft. Carson as well although my workplace is at the USAFA up the road. Let me know when you get out here and I'll buy you a beer at one of the local watering holes. And remember only you know what's right for you.
