What today means for Jared Page

http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/article...8-c359aae0923f

Understanding what the June 15th deadline means for the Chiefs and Jarrad Page

On June 1st, Chiefs S Jarrad Page was one of 37 restricted free agents holding an unsigned tender offer. Fourteen days later that count dwindled down to 15 players, with Page still part of the list.

Page had until 11:59 PM (EST) last night to sign Kansas City’s extended offer before a new set of circumstances came into play. As of early this morning, neither Page’s party, nor the Chiefs have confirmed a signing. The NFL office remains quiet about a transaction as well.

From a fan standpoint, there seems to be some confusion as to exactly what today means for Page and the next step that awaits both him and the organization. Hopefully this post will clarify things a bit.

The most common misconception seems to be that Page would become an unrestricted free agent if he remained unsigned after midnight. That’s not the case. In fact, the Chiefs are the only party that can release Page to the open market.

Let’s review how Page and the Chiefs got to this point, and take a look at the ramifications that June 15th brings to the table…

As most know, 2010 represents an uncapped season due it being the final year of the NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). An uncapped year brings new restrictions with it. One of those restrictions involves unrestricted free agency. Normally, four years of service qualifies a player on an expiring contract for unrestricted free agency. In an uncapped year, the minimum service required bumps up to six years.

Page’s contract expired this off-season, but he only has four years of service to his credit. Normally, Page would have been free to shop with all 32 teams; not this year. Under the new restrictions in place for 2010, Kansas City was able to retain Page as a restricted free agent.

With restricted free agents come tender offers. Page was extended a one-year tender by the Chiefs worth $1.759 million shortly before the start of free agency, but with that he was also free to negotiate with other clubs until April 15th. If another team wanted to sign Page, the Chiefs would receive a second-round pick from that club to compensate for the loss of their tendered RFA.

No other teams ended up presenting Page with an offer sheet, so he remained property of the Chiefs.

On June 1st, Page remained unsigned and the Chiefs had three options to choose from:

1) Extend the previous offer

2) Let the previous offer expire, making Page an unrestricted free agent

Kansas City chose option number one and that’s where the situation stood as of 11:59 PM (EST) last night.

Following midnight, the Chiefs have the ability to reduce Page’s offer to 110% of his 2009 salary if he remained unsigned. The cost of not signing and allowing the Chiefs to enact upon this option would amount to a loss of roughly $60,000 for Page.

That’s where the situation currently stands, unless the team confirms a signing occurred before Monday night’s deadline. Again, Page will not become a free agent solely from the clock striking midnight; the Chiefs would have to make that happen, not a deadline.

Unless the two sides decide to part ways, Kansas City retains the rights to negotiate with Page up until the Tuesday following Week 10 of the regular season. If Page remains unsigned after that point, he becomes ineligible to play in 2010.

To date, Page has refrained from participating in all off-season activities conducted in Kansas City. We’ll keep you up to date if a change in Page’s status can be confirmed.

Fug him... We drafted his sorry ass replacement with the 5th pick of the draft. He can sit and sulk as long as he wants to. In the meantime, his replacement is learning the system and being given playing time to showcase his skills (in a back-up role). When/if Page shows up, I'de make him work his ass off against the third string offense, then put him on the inactive list on gameday.

Wasn't there a rumor floating around that Page was pretty seriously injured and was basically holding out for an injury settlement? That makes as much sense as anything in this situation.

If he shows to practice he has to sign a medical waiver that says he is fit to play. At that point he forfiets his injury settlement and could very likely get cut because he is still injured.

Like i said this is gretz and the chiefs media trying to mind **** page. Get him to show up only to cut him and/or turn the fans on him. the later has seemed to work.
Hes is damn sure better between the ears than any other viable safety option on the roster other than berry.

This only makes sense if he is injured andthe injury is bad enough to make him worry that no other team would sign him. Thus, his only hope is an injury settlement and retire versus, signing the tender, being cut and then no other team having interest. Either way he is out of football in 2010; but, by not signing, he is hoping for a settlement.

he could screw the chiefs by getting his settlement after the new CBA or if no CBA is in place & be reinstated under new rules/terms of the 2011 season.

I don't get the animosity toward Page. He's a decent safety, and was hardly a weak link in the secondary. I'm not so quick to anoint Lewis the starting job just because of some OTA reports. Page has some valuable experience there.

He needs to get his ass to practice, sure.. But he's hardly the first guy to sit out some voluntary practices over contract issues.

He pretty much single handedly won us 2 games against Oakland the past couple years. You gotta respect the guy for that at least... It wouldn't be a bad thing if he still made it to camp and got involved.

I think people make too much of big plays made by players that are otherwise extremely average players.
("extremely average". I know it ain't right so don't blow a gasket. Just making a point.)

Studebaker's interceptions against Pittsburg, DJ's big game against the Donkeys, Page's plays against the Raiders.

Guys haven't done anything else to warrant the drool.

That being said, we really don't have anyone else, so I'd rather have Page lining up alongside Berry than any of the other scrubs we have on the roster, until someone steps up and actually wins the job.

No blown gaskets. He is average. I'm not trying to make more out of him than he is. But I think he's considerably better there than the alternatives we have now at the position. The only other safety that's seen legit game action is McGraw, and I'd prefer that they save him for special teams and emergencies. Morgan has had his chance and has done squat with it. The rest are completely unproven. Page is a relatively cheap guy that's somewhat versatile and doesn't have any glaring deficiencies. A useful tool to keep in the toolbox...

Blown gasket was in reference to the use of poor grammar ("extremely average").

We're on the same page as it relates to the subject at hand.

No, actually the reason hes pissed is because he was put on the IR. He was hurt... but he was back to 100% by our last game or two... and was pissed that he couldn't play because the Chiefs didn't want to waste a active roster spot on someone who can't play most of the season.

So when Page crawls into Haley's dog house, will he see a "DJ was here" carving etched into one of the wooden panels ?
