Chiefs buzz: Croyle lacking game action

Chiefs buzz: Croyle lacking game action

Practice isn’t like a game

Quarterback Brodie Croyle hasn’t played in a game since the preseason and now will probably start Sunday’s game against the Chargers in place of Matt Cassel. As much practice as the Chiefs give Croyle — it’s a considerable amount this week, but normally not much — practice isn’t the same as a game because it’s conducted at a much slower speed.

The Chiefs in recent weeks had several chances to get Croyle playing time. They fell hopelessly behind the Broncos in Denver a month ago and since then held sizable leads against the Cardinals and Seahawks in the fourth quarter.

In each case, coach Todd Haley kept Cassel in the game.

“With where you are in some of those games, you’re not going to be throwing the football,” Haley said. “I don’t know that you’re not getting some of the same things in practice.”

Cassel didn’t practice again Thursday after having an appendectomy a day earlier. Unless the Chiefs break one of Haley’s rules, Cassel would have to practice today to play in San Diego.

“The policy is you have to have some semblance of practice,” Haley said. “We’ll see as the week plays out exactly where we are. Right now we’ve got two days under our belt, and we’ve got two more left.”

Getting the ball to Bowe

The Chiefs failed to get the ball to wide receiver Dwayne Bowe in last week’s game against Denver, and it’s probably no coincidence they scored only 10 points in beating the Broncos. The Chargers undoubtedly took note of the connection and will probably make a similar effort to take Bowe out of the game.

“That can’t be something that we allow to happen one way or another,” Haley said. “It’s our job as coaches to find ways to help the receivers. It’s the receiver’s duty to continue to step his game up against the competition and make plays. That’s what I fully expect from Dwayne. He’s trying to continue to make steps to being a really good player in the league, and this is the next step for him, going against really good competition that knows he’s one of the guys that gets the football a bunch.”

Wiegmann can relate

Center Casey Wiegmann missed the final exhibition game and the regular-season opener in 2001 after having an appendectomy in a procedure similar to Cassel’s.

“It took me a couple of weeks,” Wiegmann said. “They didn’t want to rush me back too fast. I could have played in one week, but they just didn’t want to risk it for the rest of the year.”

Injury report

The Chiefs made one change to their practice report. They said reserve defensive back Donald Washington (ankle) was limited in practice. He didn’t practice the day before.

Safety Kendrick Lewis (ankle) was also limited. Cassel was the only other player listed, and he didn’t practice because of what the Chiefs continued to call an illness.

Dude, settle down. Youre a solid poster, no need to go full Dane on everyone... its only a few people that are happy about Cassels injury.. Not everyone...

I wasn't referring to you man I picked up on your sarcasm. That's just been the tone from a bunch of guys about Croyle starting. That somehow he's more talented than Cassel and that we'll finally take a step forward with Croyle starting. It's like ****ing bizarro world.

Its not bizarro, is CHIEFSPLANET!

I am hoping and praying that we dont miss a beat and Croyle shows that he is worth resigning this offseason as the backup..

but to think that were going to be some downfield air it out team now that Brokie is in playing, is pretty ****ing stupid if you ask me... When has Weis EVER been a huge Al Davis wannabe downfield guy? Never as far as I can remember...

Give me a break. The guy can do what Cassel does + some things Cassel cant.
Except perhaps take a hit.......

That's one thing you have to give Cassel, he's a tough son of a bitch and can take a shot.

So I keep being told. Funny how even Huard could manage a a string of wins with a decimated line, no coaching, and LJ being ran 1000 times a game.

If Croyle somehow eeks out a win it doesn't change anything. The dude would still be 1-9 as a starter. We don't need to "evaluate" Croyle at all. I can't believe I keep reading that. The dude is not going to challenge for the starting spot here, and no one is going to give up draft picks for the guy either. Nothing of REAL value anyway. Like I said, it's like ****ing bizarro world around here. Unreal.

You are right. And as the week has gone by I've become more and more excited about Croyle playing.

Croyle was 0-9
Cassel was 4-12 last year

Not much difference

Actually there is a big difference between 0-9 and 4-12, and also between.....

11-5 and 0-9

and 8-4 and 0-9

See what I did there?

Thanks for playing.

No Kidding, the Great Brokie could have turned it around those last 7 games and went 7 - 9, maybe at least 5-11 ? No ?

Everybody just settle down. The situation is what it is. None of us can change it except the Chiefs coaches. It's up to them to regroup and put forth a game plan that the Chargers may not even think about.

With this in mind, Brodie has been out of playing time for a while, look for SD to put the heat on him early and often.

1st play, check the Hot route ( blitz ) and if giving enough time, go long on the 1st play, send a signal that none of this 8 men in the box crap. Personally, if we block the line correctly, with Charles & Jones on the 8 men in the box it could produce some BIG GAINS.

I say the Chargers are the ones that have to figure out how to play us now.
