Michael Vick would like to be a dog owner again.

The Philadelphia Eagles QB -- convicted in 2007 of a federal dogfighting crime -- has said he would like to run full circle and again own a dog if the courts will allow him.

Vick was banned from owning a dog as part of the sentence handed down that sent him to prison for 18 months.

"I would love to get another dog in the future," Vick told TheGrio.com. "I think it would be a big step for me in the rehabilitation process. I think just to have a pet in my household and to show people that I genuinely care, and my love, and my passion for animals."

Vick, enjoying one of his best-ever seasons after winning the Eagles' starting job in September, has tried to make amends for his dogfighting past.

He completed his 20-month sentence, which included two months of home confinement, and began working with the Humane Society.

Vick was banned from owning a dog under the terms of his supervised release in July 2009. The supervised release was set to run for three years.

Vick has since apologized for his role in the dogfighting ring and he now informs young people about the evils of the bloodsport.

He told TheGrio.com he was around dogfighting from a young age.

"I hate to use our culture as an excuse, but it is what it is and that's what happened and that's the way I thought about it growing up," Vick said. "This is just the way we were brought up."

Vick has said that prison changed him and made him a smarter and more mature person for having to endure the embarrassment and personal pain of incarceration.

And he made an interesting note about what advice he would give now to himself four years ago.

"That Mike probably wouldn't listen to nothing that I had to say," Vick said.

No, it is equivalent to a bank robber going to a bank IMO.

Pedophiles are typically under the influence of previous mental afflictions like being abused, or something traumatic, and often can't control their desires, thus being a threat to do it again. With Vick, there hasn't been any indication that he is in any way addicted to dog figthing or would do anything to ever hurt another animal. He made extremely bad decision in the eyes of animcal cruelty, and in (illegal) business decisions.

I could see him 100% banned from doing any sorts of betting, or that sort of thing, but unless there is a precedence of people that did time for animal cruelty never being allowed to own a pet again I would think it is a little overboard to restrict Vick in that, or anyone else for that matter that did so.

He should ease into it. He could start out with a cat or a lizard. If that works out okay, he could move to something a little closer to a dog, like a Chihuahua. If that goes okay, let him get a dog.

Either you have paid your debt to society or you have not. Either you should be in jail, a mental institution, or free. If you are free, you should be free. Get rid of the list (or put them into a mental institution), let Vick have his dog, and move on.

I understand restraining orders from specific people who are threatened, but aside from exceptions like that, we should get away from this whole "ok, we'll let you go, but..." stuff. If you let them go, let them go. If you aren't sure, why let them go?
