Probably but the backlash and public support for new stadium improvements would be harder to get if he ended up with both. Western Resources was trying to merge with Kansas City Power & Light at the time and needed goodwill in the city.

In hindsight even it looked like a smart move by Lamar teaming up with a local company for the bid.
